WebridesTV.com : Nissan GT-R vs Ford GT

PR Newswire

WebRidesTV.com Super Lap Crushes Nissan GT-R Fantasy

""The Nissan GT-R has received a ton of love from the media. WebRidesTV.com test drove the car too and were split 50/50. Half of the reviewers wanted to sell the farm and buy the GT-R and the other half thought it lacked the appropriate refinement, especially the transmission. We put the GT-R up against the Ford GT to see if a completely different gene pool, in each case producing similar performance but totally different approaches to the automotive experience, could generate some surprises in the results," says Technical Editor at WebRidesTV.com Larry Harvey.

Harvey continues, "Can an American mid engine rear drive shade tree car with the raw spirit of sixties racing in mind, beat the futuristic mid-front engine all wheel drive Japanese dragon?" "

"WebRidesTV.com and professional race car driver Craig Stanton tested the 2009 Nissan GT-R against the 2006 Ford GT on a WebRidesTV.com Super Lap which includes, high speed transitions (slaloms), a decreasing radius turn, a constant radius turn and a straight away. The Nissan GT-R vs. the Ford GT video will be released in June 2008 on WebRidesTV.com.

Car and Driver Magazine : M3 vs GT-R vs 911 Turbo

Via VWVortex forums

Some interesting quotes and points

"#1 - BMW M3 - 220 points
#2 - Nissan GT-R - 206 points
#3 - Porsche 911 Turbo - 193 Points

BMW M3 - Direct connection between man and machine, vice free handling, feathery feel, Grammy worthy engine.

Nissan GT-R - Excessive road noise, clunky and rough transmission, far too wide, and too heavy. Nissan aims for Ferrari and falls between M3 and 911 Turbo.

C&D says: Nissan and Porsche "should give up on building their own cars and build M3's instead."

"Until that Elise thing hapens, the M3 is the car we'd take home forever.""

12.1@115 is way down on speed and ET. Car and Driver has been known to publish some slightly off numbers in the past. ie the 14.0 ET for R33 GT-R. Not sure how they did that way back when, but they did.

Edmunds Inside Line - GT-R vs the World

From Edmunds Inside Line

Edmunds Inside line took a variety of vehicles to Glendora Mountain Road, and Streets of Willow Springs to do a comparison test.

"Fact is, we asked Chevy for a 2008 Corvette Z06 and we asked Dodge for a 2008 Viper SRT10, but both refused to loan us their cars — presumably because we'd be testing their best metal against the almighty GT-R.

Sniff, sniff. Does somebody smell chicken?"

The GT-R was quickest, but the Audi R8 was right there behind it.

Dan Neil of the LA Times Changes his Mind

LA Times

"Nissan GT-R. It occurred to me well after the fact that one reason the car felt uninvolving driven hard is that Nissan's press event was held on a tiny little road course outside Reno, Nev. More an autocross course than a proper road course, it was hard to gin up enough speed and energy to really work the car's prodigious suspension and powertrain. Only solution is to take one to the Nurburgring. The things I do for you people."

I guess he needs to get into the car on a real track.

Complaining about R35 GT-R cost in the US ? Be glad you don't live in Finland

From World Car Fans Sorry if you do live in Finland. Not saying its a bad place to live. Just expensive. More expensive than here in the US.

"A Nissan dealer in Finland announced today that the pricing for the Nissan GT-R will be set at an astronomical €147,700 including taxes (base price announced by Nissan is Euro 75,000), equivalent to $235,000 which is an amazing four times more than the official US pricing of $69850."

"Obviously we cannot be sure how much of the €72,700 premium over the €75,000 base price is tax and how much is lining the dealer's pockets and it is unlikely that the dealer is going to tell us. And let us not forget the poor Europeans are paying in excess of €1.50 per liter of petrol(gasoline) – equivalent to $10.70 per gallon."

The Truth About Cars ?

This story from the Truth About Cars is funny. Uninformed, and a bit late if nothing else. This was posted today, like it was news. May 1st the press release about the 7:29 with a standard production car, and standard tires was put out.

So lets start with this guys uninformed or misinformed statements.

"As TTAC has pointed out, there are real questions about the Green Hellmobile’s qualifications for the title “second fastest production car around the ‘Ring.” The GT-R's suspension was modified from the current Japanese production model, supposedly to reflect the American and European spec. Supposedly. Will anyone get a chance to compare the fabled ‘Ring runner and a final production car? I doubt it."

The 7:38 was shown in a video. Data showing a 7:37 lap was also found, however Nissan chose to show the slower time. A new press release went out recently with Nissan claiming a 7:29 time at the ring. Data has been released on that run, but no video yet. The changes to the suspension were after the 7:38 run and before the 7:29 run.

"Meanwhile, the YouTube video of the Nissan’s “historic run” clearly shows that the GT-R had a flying start. All other manufacturers testing at the ‘Ring use standing starts for published lap times. The video also proves that the car's lap time was not measured at the exact same location (start and stop). Take these two factors into account, and the 7:40 claim seems highly dubious."

Who does a standing start ? GM did a standing start. Who else did a standing start? The Zonda did a flying lap. BMW does flying laps as put out in their Nurburging lap guide.

This part has already been explained. Its a partial misquote.

"The icing on the cake: GT-R chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno’s subsequent admission from that "We used cut slick tyres." If that doesn’t cancel their claim, nothing does."
He said the car would have been quicker if they used cut slick tires. The 7:29 run, Nissan was very clear to state the car was a production car, on production tires. They actually used the Dunlop summer tires, which are about 4-5 seconds quicker than the Bridgestone tires.

"So why did I bother ranting about this? Nissan has chosen to flaunt its Nürburgring lap times to show the world that their new, high-tech Nissan GT-R is the new bang-for-the-buck Alpha. But it’s not true. The cheaper Corvette Z06 is still the worlds best [unmodified] performance car bargain. What’s more, if the GT-R cannot handle a stock Z06, then how will it fare against the upcoming ZR1? Never mind the 'almighty' spec V model."

Never mind the spec V( Vspec) ? Never mind the lighter and more powerful car. The one they have already said that will come on more aggressive tires ? I have seen lots of Z06's at the dragstrip. In most owners hands, a 12 second car. One guy, one day, at a track in Maryland, below sea level air day ran a 10.9 pass. Sure it could be done, the Z06 is a fast car. However most people are not that good. All wheel drive > RWD in 90% of the real world situations. Turbo car over NA car all day, everyday. I think many Z06 owners will be getting this lesson.

Haltech R35 GT-R video 11.1 @ 124 mph

7:29 Nurburging lap Nissan GT-R story - Vspec information

From Drivers Republic via CBA-R35 Blog

"First up that Nurburgring lap. The target for the GTR was always 7:30 - and it had to be achieved in a fully representative 'customer-spec' car. Mizuno is quite clear on this: 'This time was set on a totally standard car, just like a customer will get. For us 'Time Attack' must be repeatable in a customer car. No special brake pads or cut-slick tyres - everything was standard GTR.' The time, set on April 8th, was achieved on the Dunlop SP Sport 600 DSST tyre that is standard on the basic GTR (i.e. non Premium or 'Black' spec, which both have Bridgestone RE070R tyres). The Dunlop is a little noisier and not quite as good in the wet as the RE070R, but in the dry it's worth 4-5 seconds around the 'Ring. Incredibly all the tests of the GTR in the UK so far have been on the slower Bridgestone - and yet it has consistently set faster lap times than cars like the GT3."

Ok NAGTROC folk that were questioning if the Dunlop Sport tires were quicker than the premium Bridgestone tires.

"Incredibly there's more to come. Mizuno, Suzuki and the rest of the team are already well into the V-Spec development programme. Both men are tight lipped about the project but with an increase in power (to around 550bhp) and a 100kg weight saving, the V-Spec should move the GTR even further ahead of its rivals. Suzuki thinks the car should be as much as 10-seconds quicker than the standard car around the 'Ring. However, the V-Spec will have more extreme track-biased tyres, which will account for a large chunk of the time saving."

Vspec they want to be 10 seconds quicker. It will all depend on what the ZR1 does at the ring.

Haltech R35 GT-R runs 11.1@124mph

From GT-R Blog

"Haltech Nissan R35 GT-R run. In their first run of the morning at 9.30am on a cold track into a headwind they ran an 11.1 @ 124mph using the GT-R’s launch control system. Their second run saw the launch control system disarm itself prior to the start but they still ran an 11.5 @ 125.9mph. Their third and final run saw similar issues and they managed an 11.8 @ 126mph. It must be said that this is Halltech’s first run down the strip in the new GT-R so the launch control routine is still not 100% familiar to all their drivers."
"So yes you read that right, standard GT-R, full interior, full stock exhaust, Haltech ECU runs 11.1. It doesn’t stop here though, Halltech hope to see 10’s with a little more development and a strong launch on a good day. I’d say they’re well on their way to meeting this goal."

Getting pretty close to 10's with a fairly stock car.

Nissan 370Z picture and information

From Autoblog

"A recent presentation held somewhere on this floating orb we call Earth, however, included a slide that pretty much removes the mystery surround the rear-wheel-drive coupe's new looks. Fortunately for us, someone at the presentation forgot to confiscate everyone's camera phone. So what we see is a new 370Z that very much retains the basic shape of the current car, but features softened creases, fenders flaired even more, a kinky C-pillar and a pair of headlights with an odd 'L' shape that first debuted on the 2009 Maxima. Along with the new shape, the new engine should offer buyers around 330 horsepower,"

Nissan GT 2012 Mid-term Business Plan Unveiled

Nissan GT 2012 Mid-term Business Plan Unveiled

TOKYO (May 13, 2008) – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced financial results for the fiscal year 2007, ending March 31, 2008, and filed the following results with the Tokyo Stock Exchange:

* Net revenues of 10.824 trillion yen (US $94.62 billion, euro 66.98 billion)
* Operating profit of 790.8 billion yen (US $6.91 billion, euro 4.89 billion)
* Ordinary profit of 766.4 billion yen (US $6.70 billion, euro 4.74 billion)
* Consolidated net income of 482.3 billion yen (US $4.22 billion, euro 2.98 billion)
* Operating profit margin of 7.3%

Nissan sold a record 3,770,000 vehicles worldwide in fiscal year 2007, an increase of 8.2%. In North America, sales were 1,352,000 units, up 1.3%; United States sales were 1,059,000 units, up 3.0%. In Japan, sales were 721,000 units, down 2.5%. In Europe, sales came to 636,000 units, up 17.9%. Sales in General Overseas Markets (GOM) were up 22.1% at 1,061,000 units, surpassing the 1-million mark for the first time.

In fiscal year 2007, Nissan released 11 all-new models globally: Livina, X-TRAIL, Altima Coupe, Atlas truck, Aprio, Infiniti G37 Coupe, Rogue, GT-R, Infiniti EX luxury crossover, Murano and a single-cab version of the Frontier Navara pickup truck.

The company's net automotive cash position stood at 180.3 billion yen (US $1.58 billion, euro 1.12 billion) at the end of fiscal 2007. As originally planned at the start of Nissan Value-Up, Nissan will propose a 20-yen-per-share year-end dividend at the company's annual shareholders' meeting in June, for a full-year dividend of 40 yen per share for fiscal 2007.

"In a challenging and volatile environment, Nissan demonstrated that it has reached the maturity to deliver a high level of performance," said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn.

Nissan GT 2012

Nissan also released an outline of its new five-year business plan called "Nissan GT 2012," which covers the period from April 1, 2008, to March 31, 2013. With "G" for growth and "T" for trust, this new plan is focused on the company's long-term performance combined with its responsibilities to stakeholders as a significant global business.

Nissan GT 2012 contains corporate commitments and business breakthroughs. The three commitments are:

1. Quality leadership: In addition to focusing on product quality, the company will continue and accelerate actions to improve service, brand and management quality.

2. Zero-emission vehicle leadership: Nissan will introduce an all-electric vehicle in the U.S. and Japan in 2010 and then mass-market vehicles to consumers globally in 2012.

3. Five percent revenue growth on average over five years (FY2008 to FY2012): Revenue growth will be supported by a product plan that will launch 60 all-new models in the next five years and more than 15 new technologies every year from 2009.

The three commitments of Nissan GT 2012 will be backed by five business breakthroughs:

* Quality leadership
* Zero-emission vehicle leadership
* Business expansion: Infiniti, Light Commercial Vehicles and global entry cars
* Market expansion: India, Middle East, Brazil, Russia and China
* Cost leadership

"Nissan GT 2012 reflects the determination of our company to play a major role in the development of a sustainable mobile society," commented Ghosn. "There's a balance to be sought between the potential growth in world markets and the demand for a cleaner planet. We are convinced that the mass availability of affordable zero-emission vehicles is the most significant breakthrough our industry could deliver, and, together with Renault, Nissan intends to be the breakthrough leader."

FY2008 outlook

The global sales forecast for fiscal 2008 is 3.9 million units. The main contributions to volume growth will come primarily from GOM and Russia. Nissan will launch nine all-new products during fiscal 2008: Teana, Infiniti FX, Maxima, Bakkie successor, Qashqai+2, a mini SUV, Cube, Z and Infiniti G37 Convertible.

In 2008, principal external risks are high commodity and energy prices, volatile foreign exchange and weakening mature automotive markets.

* Based on the company's outlook and assuming foreign exchange rates of 100 yen/dollar and 155 yen/euro, Nissan filed the following forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, with the Tokyo Stock Exchange:
* Consolidated net revenues of 10.35 trillion yen (US $103.50 billion, euro 66.77 billion)
* Operating profit of 550 billion yen (US $5.50 billion, euro 3.55 billion)
* Ordinary profit of 545 billion yen (US $5.45 billion, euro 3.52 billion)
* Net income of 340 billion yen (US $3.40 billion, euro 2.19 billion)

Note 1: Amounts in dollars and euros for the results are translated for the convenience of the reader at the foreign exchange rates of 114.4 yen/dollar and 161.6 yen/euro, the average rates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008.

Note 2: For the purpose of comparison with FY2007, FY2006 excludes the one-time fifth-quarter inclusion made in 2006 to harmonize the fiscal years of overseas subsidiaries such as Europe and Mexico.

Car and Driver - One Lap Report - Tony Swan

Car and Driver via Nagtroc

"If you’ve been following the web chatter about the 2009 Nissan GT-R, you probably already know that the long-awaited Japanese supercoupe made its U.S. race track debut during last week’s One Lap of America competition.

And if you know that, you may also know that the GT-R finished 11th overall, in a field of 72 entrants.

This has led to a lot of dialogue in the blogosphere, much of it along the lines of “if this car is so hot, why’d it only finish 11th? Why didn’t it win the whole thing?” "

"The GT-R’s strength is fast tracks, and nowhere was this more apparent than Road America, the great four-mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

The super Nissan hurled itself down Road America’s long straights with an intoxicating zeal, handled its fast turns with confidence-inspiring predictability, and stopped from high speeds—over 150 mph on the speedo—with gratifying
repeatability.

At the end of the three-lap run—the standard One Lap road course time trial—the GT-R had the fourth fastest time of the day, trailing only the ACR Viper, the championship-winning Porsche Turbo, and the turbo Z06 Corvette. "

2009 Nissan GT-R on Motorweek

Motorweek

"It's a sad but true fact of life. Few new cars live up to their pre-production promotional hype. But, one that is on course to do just that is the 2009 Nissan GT-R. As Nissan's first supercar, the GT-R looks ready to take on the world's best sports cars in both visual drama and full-tilt driving performance.

If you want to know what it's like to sit behind the wheel of this automotive rarity, be sure to check out our MotorWeek road test of the Nissan GT-R on episode #2736. It begins airing on PBS network stations on May 9th and on cable's SPEED beginning May 12th."

One Lap of America : R35 GT-R :Final Results explaination

From Nagtroc

"Thanks for the sympathy on the last two events. There was a lot of coufusion about what was happening with the autocross. As of 9am Saturday morning, we had been restored to 7th place because the staff had decided to score the autocross more like they do the bracket racing (which we didn't run because of rain), where even if you're eliminated in the first round you get some points. So they gave all the DNFs 120 points. For some reason, everyone but us had been given the 120 points, so we were in 10th place before the skid pad. Someone noticed the error, and they added 120 for us, which restored us to 7th place. (I don't think that ever got posted on the web site, however, but it was printed out and posted at Tire Rack).

So we figured no matter how we did on the skid pad we were in the top ten. Smiling faces all around. But some of the others who had done really well at the autox protested, since the rules said a DNF was 0 points. So the decision was reversed. We ran the skid pad in reverse order (one guy literally ran it IN REVERSE because he lost his tranny on the way there) with the top cars running last. By the time we got done, about 11am, we found out not only did we lose that 120 points, but we hadn't done well enough on the skid pad to make it up. 11th place was a heartbreaker after all that.

We missed 10th by 40 points. If we'd had that 120, it would have been 8th. But that's one lap. We never argued one way or the other for our standings, we just let it ride.

I think the results at Road America (where we were 4th) is a pretty good assesssment of what that car is good at and what it can do. Tony knows that track, but hadn't had seat time in the car there. It was dry, so the tires were good. And it's along, fast track which is what the GTR excells at.

At the awards, 5-time winners DaVia and Wickstrom (who met autocrossing) offered us free autocross lessons any time.
Will post photos soon.

They did well in the car.

One Lap of America : R35 GT-R BeaveRun Autocross Results

From Nagtroc

AAARRRGGGHHH! We had a DNF on the autocross. The knife is twisting in the chest!
I thought we were going to run the kart course they have at Beaverun, which is what we did last time we were here. But nooooo. It was a real autocross. This event separated the men from the autocrossers, that's for sure. Tony ain't no autocrosser.

The way it was set up we each got one pass at the autocross, and that was it, period. Miss a gate, it was a DNF. Turns out LOTS of cars DNF (I think either 21 or 28, depending on who we talked to tonight), and instead of finishing anyway, many just left the course. If you're getting 0 points, what's the point in finishing? There was some talk among the One Lap staff about how to make it a little more fair -- but lots of people had packed up and left by then so there was no way to allow a second run. They couldn't count missing a gate as a 2-second penalty because so many drivers hadn't finished the course. We dropped from 5th overall this morning to 10th overall. OUCH. But there's still the dry skid pad tomorrow....of course everyone is in the bar tonight at South Bend comparing notes and having a great time. I'm setting up the asprin concession at the skid pad tomorrow.

Anyway, that's One Lap. Those of you who think this event is some kind of referendum on the quality of the GT-R or any other car have it wrong. This is old-fashioned, unpredictable, mix-it-up, run-what-you-brung FUN. Ending up in the top ten with a DNF is still pretty good, especially with as much rain and drizzle as we had. We hope we can hang on to that or better it a little tomorrow. The skid pad is also one of those events that can turn things upside down. The overall numbers don't tell it all.

Best part is we're all friends. If you can spare a week and some change, come join us next year. You'll see how strange and wonderful One Lap is. Now I gotta get some sleep. Group photo at Tire Rack at 8am, skid pad starts at 9. --ms

From Nagtroc - MC 's video

Looks like its humping pretty good...aka moving along well

One Lap of America Nissan R35 GT-R : VIR

I read that it was raining. I think these results show that. VIR #1

From Nagtroc - "#1 run was on South course and the track was very wet. Not standing water, but very wet. I bet I heard Tony say atleat 5 times that the car just doesn't handle well in the wet. Not with those tires on it atleast. What you can't see from the numbers is traffic. The session was black flagged first lap out I believe. Second lap was ok but once again just coming up to speed, 3rd lap Tony had a car spin in front of him that he had to slow for, 4th lap is cool down. Remember South course is VERY short, it doesn't take long to catch another car."

"#2 session was on full course. It was dry by this point in the day. Tony I know could have ran a better time but that was his first outing on VIR full. I mean I have seen a N/A 350Z with suspension and stickies run 2:10's. This track has some scary turns and to try and turn a fast time by your 3rd lap ever around the track, to me that would be difficult."

One Lap of America Nissan R35 GT-R : Some explainations from the GT-R

From Nagtroc

"I'm a co-driver in the GTR. Had to get on here to defend our honor. We're really sorry to hear Leh is out, he's a great guy and has run really well. I have to say I'm impressed with how fair y'all have been, for the most part. To set the record straight:
Leh is right, the LC was cutting out after Tony set it. He practiced launch a couple of times, but apparently when you're inching up to staging, tapping the brake, it doesn't like that. After the first run, Tony tested it again before lining up. Worked perfectly. I watched him. I suggested maybe he should just put it in full auto and stand on it, but he'd seen what it could to. C/D tested THIS car last week and ran 11.7 -- however, it laboratory conditions aren't the same as on the strip. Anyway, second time he tried setting it after getting up to the staging area (good thing they just count ET, not RT!), but still no luck.
A Nissan engineer who happened to be in the area came out to BMW yesterday and tried to replicate it, but couldn't. We weren't with him when he tried it out, so I don't know how similar his attempts were to staging on a drag strip.
A few other items, FYI:"

"
1. Yes, Tony IS a grandpa. As someone pointed out, it IS great to be doing what he's doing at his age or any other.
2. Yes, he's been racing for years and has now done 32 24-hour races. But some of these tracks he's never been on before--few drivers have been on all of them.
3. Yes, the car is bone stock. Many others aren't, but it's not true that only pro drivers win. Mark DaVia is not a pro and has won four times. His ABS went out yesterday.
4. No, we haven't had the car for a month. Got it a week before the event, but Tony had a cast on his wrist until Weds and we left for the event Friday. No seat time on a track until Road America. Tony won his class there at the June Sprints last year, and knows it well.
5. Yes, these tires aren't good in the wet. But it was raining like mad at TWS -- some of those photos were taken before we started. After the first run group it really stared pouring.

We're at VIR now, and it's raining. Tony looked at the rain and said "God must hate me." We'll see! We look forward to meeting any of you who come out and now I have to run
Mary"

Edmunds - Inside Line - GT-R Full Test

"For a few seconds, you give in to the spectacle of driving a 2009 Nissan GT-R. This car attracts its own entourage and then takes you along for the ride. It's not just the Skyline mystique, either. It's the fact that even in production sheet metal, the R35 GT-R looks like a one-off concept stolen from a Southern California design studio. It has as many hard contours as a Porsche 911 has soft curves. You have the key fob, and still you ogle it."
Edmunds Inside Line

* Twin-turbo 480-hp V6
* 11.7-second quarter-mile at 116.8 mph (second to '07 911 Turbo)
* 74.0-mph slalom speed (second to '08 Viper)
* Stops from 60 mph in 98 feet (new IL record)

0 - 30 (sec): 1.5
0 - 45 (sec): 2.4
0 - 60 (sec): 3.5
0 - 75 (sec): 5.1
1/4 Mile (sec @ mph): 11.7 @ 117.7
0-60 with 1-ft Rollout (sec): 3.2
30 - 0 (ft): 25
60 - 0 (ft): 98
Braking Rating (Excellent, Good, Average, Poor or Very Poor): Excellent
Slalom (mph): 74.0
Skid Pad Lateral acceleration (g): 0.96

"Our U.S.-spec R35 loses its edge over the JDM GT-R by the quarter-mile mark, though. It runs an 11.7-second quarter-mile at 116.8 mph, while the Japanese car goes through in 11.6 seconds at 120.9 mph. Note that these latest numbers reflect our transition to reporting NHRA-style trap speed, which is the average of a car's speed over the last 66 feet of the quarter-mile."

"Even if you look at the U.S.-spec GT-R's instantaneous quarter-mile speed of 117.7 mph, there's no denying it's slower than the JDM GT-R. The reason is, it's making fewer horsepower while running on our inferior 91-octane gasoline. The red GT-R benefited from the 94-to-95-octane fuel that's readily available in Japan."

Sony and Nissan : GT Academy

From Autoblog

"Opportunity to drive for the Nissan team at the 24H Dubai endurance race – courtesy of PlayStation, Nissan and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue ™

London, 6 May 2008: Industry leaders PlayStation and Nissan have come together to create the ultimate competitive driving test - GT Academy. The eight-month, pan-European competition sees virtual and real-life racing merge to make the wildest dreams of two aspiring race drivers come true. The prize: a four-month training programme to earn their racing licences, followed by a real-life race driving a Nissan 350Z as part of the Nissan team at the 24H endurance race in Dubai in January 2009.

To earn a place in GT Academy, candidates will face a series of elimination-based competitions on and off the racetrack - starting at a national level with an online GT5 Prologue tournament hosted on PLAYSTATION®Network."

"

GT Academy builds on the long-standing partnership between PlayStation and Nissan that began with Nissan working with Gran Turismo developers Polyphony Digital. Nissan provided vehicles, racing drivers and feedback to help perfect the game's ultra-realistic driving simulation.

Roles were reversed in 2007 when Nissan called upon Polyphony Digital to design the interface for the onboard computer for the GT-R, Nissan's new supercar. The 'multifunction meter' provides drivers with updates on the car's performance and systems – a collaboration recognised as a motoring industry first. In the latest game, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™), Nissan's GT-R joins a garage filled with 71 dream cars including seven other top Nissan sports cars.

Speaking at PlayStation Day, David Reeves, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said:

"Gran Turismo is one of the most successful global gaming franchises of the last decade and is renowned for its realism, quality of design and in-car physics technology. PlayStation is now part of the global motor sport community from its games to its Gran Turismo TV channel – and now the GT Academy. The academy brings the real and virtual worlds of racing together and is the ultimate test to see if virtual drivers have what it takes to race in a competitive environment where there isn't the option to play again."

Simon Sproule, Corporate Vice President, Global Communications, Nissan Motor Ltd, added:

"We're delighted to build on the close relationship between Nissan and Sony PlayStation. This represents the competition prize of a lifetime for racing enthusiasts; a prize that brings the worlds of gaming and racing even closer together. We look forward to welcoming our new team drivers for the race in Dubai."

GT Academy goes live at the end of May. Entrants must register, via their PS3s, on the PLAYSTATION®Network (PSN) to compete in the special online tournament. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PS3 has sold over one million units since its launch, with the Gran Turismo franchise now having sold more than 50 million units worldwide."
