Urban Racer Coverage of Long Beach Grand Prix

Urban Racer has been covering the “Sport Compact” segment for years, lifestyle to racing to time attack.  One of their recent articles covers the Long Beach Grand Prix, and the multitude of events that make up a Long Beach weekend.  Team Drift , ALMS, World Challenge, and Pro Celebrity race.

They seemed suprised by the World Challenge series, with its new format.  Three classes of cars, and a Formula D driver Tyler MacQuarrie winning GTS has sparked some more interest in the series.

Head over to the site to check out the massive gallery of images from the weekend.

10 Reasons the 370Z is Better Than the GT-R : Import Tuner

Carter from Import Tuner wrote in the May 2010 issue of Import Tuner Magazine, 10 reasons he likes the Z34 370Z , more than the R35 GT-R. The 370z is certainly a great sports car, but it does look like a redheaded stepchild next to the GT-R.
A couple of the reasons Carter likes the 370z.
10. Clutch pedal. Micro-second shifts are for the birds. I'll take my half-assed heel-toe over paddle shifters any day.
6. Curb weight. The R35 weighs in at around 600 lbs heftier than the Z34, or the equivalent of the former cast of Jon & Kate Plus Eight or one and a half The Biggest Loser contestant(s).
4. Price. Can you afford an R35? I sure can't. Take away the fact that I work in print-automotive print, at that-unless I made well into six figures, I'm more likely to score with Olivia Munn than an R35.
Twice in this short post, he mentions Olivia Munn. I think he might have a thing for her.  I will have to ask him. Those three points are all valid points.  The clutch is a sticking point for a lot of people, however for the future the third pedal is going away. Emissions requirements mean taking the shift control away from the driver.
Weight .  Well…. all wheel drive, twin turbo.  Yes its heavy. Its going to be heavy. If it were smaller, less powerful, slower, and had less amenities, we would call it a Mitsubishi Evo or a Subaru WRX.
impp_1006_01_o initial_timing under_chassis
7. Roadster. So this one's a bit of a stretch, I know. But still, the GT-R has not and does not come in an SPF-friendly iteration.
Roadster ? I think Carter might be turning gay on us. Next we know, he will be in a bright pink Miata or a New VW Beetle. I wonder if he sold his Nissan Skyline GT-R ?  Carter has had an R32 and an R33 Skyline GT-R.
2. Tunability. 370Z + Bolt-on modifications = GT-R killer. Proof? Super Lap Battle, November 2009: Our project Z34 (p. 66) spanked not one, but two modified R35s. Let that swirl around for a minute. Two, as in a pair of GT-Rs.
A 370z beating modified GT-R’s at the track ?  More a matter of the correct steering wheel gasket than the car.  The Greddy twin turbo, coilovers, 380mm braked, and Tyler McQuarrie driven Z did a 1:59 at Buttonwillow race 13.  Steve Millen in a stock GT-R managed a 1:56 during one magazines test.  The correct driver is worth seconds and seconds of time.
Rear wheel drive may be fun, but I like all wheel drive for that grip on the street, and on the track, that just can’t be matched.

Midnight Purple 3 : R35 Nissan GT-R

One of our Nissan GTR friends from NAGTROC had his R35 GT-R painted a Nissan Skyline GT-R – R34 color – Midnight Purple 3.  Personally, I am not a big fan of purple, but lots of people like it.

A couple of camera phone pictures, with the tease of better photos to come. The stock wheels have also been refinished in a bronze color.

Ferrari 599xx at the ‘Ring : 6 Minutes 58 Seconds

700 hp , V12 Ferrari.   No matter how you cut it, the sound, the sites of a Ferrari are awesome.   Most of us will never get this close to Nurburgring, or to a Ferrari 599xx. For your enjoyment 6 minutes 58.16 of a 599xx at the ‘ring.

Is it a production car ?  Kinda. Is it fast ?   The video speaks for that. Is it a new record ? That is always open for debate.

Guess Who Turns 21 Years Old 8-21-2010 ?

R32 -21 years old Cake

If you guessed R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, then you would be correct.  21 years old. Legal to drink in the US. Cars don’t drink though. Well, nothing that makes them drive funny, unless by funny you mean fast.

So what does 21 years old really mean, when we are talking about cars ?  Not originally imported cars ?

1. Vehicles 21 Years Old Or Older
If the vehicle is at least 21 years old, there are no EPA compliance requirements upon importation. The age of the vehicle is determined by subtracting the calendar year of manufacture from the calendar year of importation. If the calendar year of manufacture is unavailable, the importer may substitute the model year or year of first registration. For instance, to qualify in 2001, the vehicle must have been manufactured in 1980 or earlier. The vehicle must be in its original unmodified configuration. Vehicles at least 21 years old with replacement engines are not eligible for this exemption unless they contain equivalent or newer EPA certified engines.

No approval or Customs bond is required by EPA. The importer must also prove to Customs, as required, that the vehicle or engine was manufactured prior to EPA regulation. Documents such as a title, or letter from the original manufacturer may be used for this purpose. The importer must file with Customs, upon entry, an EPA Form 3520-1 and declare code "E" on that form.

However , as with many other things government related that make no sense, you still must meet DOT, FMVSS requirements.  Well, at least until its 25th birthday, then you are also DOT exempt.  AND yet another HOWEVER, is California requirements, if you are in California.

Thunder on Pine Avenue: World Challenge Weekend

We had a chance to participate in the Thunder on Pine Avenue event during the World Challenge Weekend .  Pine Avenue is closed down, and the race cars are displayed, along with Indycar pitstops, and motorcycle jumping.  We got to drive the cars up Pine Ave, down Ocean to Broadway, and back onto Pine to park, with a police escort.  That was fun.

Brass Monkey Racing Takes Nissan GT-Rs to Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA – Brass Monkey Racing and its pair of Nissan GT-R World
Challenge racecars head to Southern California this weekend, April
16-18, for the Toyo Tires World Challenge at Long Beach Presented by
Bondurant Round Three race, part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long
Beach weekend.
After introducing the renowned GT-R brand to the North American racing
scene March 26-28 in St. Petersburg, Fla., the team returned to its
Houston-based raceshop to continue development on the new machines.
Utilizing completely stock driveline components and engine management,
the team focused on cooling system improvements for the
twin-turbocharged V6 engine and complex all-wheel drive differentials
and transmission.
“This is a work in progress, and our goal is to make improvements to
these cars each race and eventually win pole positions and races,”
Brass Monkey Racing Owner A.J. Brass said. “Long Beach is going to be
a tough test with a larger field than St. Petersburg, but we look
forward to showcasing the Nissan’s on the biggest stage of the season
in such a popular market for the GT-R.”
For drivers Tony Rivera and Steve Ott, the goal is similar to St.
Petersburg—finish the race and improve the car’s performance over the
course of the weekend.

“St. Pete went well for me but it could have been better,” Rivera
said. “Had I not had some overheating issues, I could have come home
with a pair of top fives. Hopefully, we have addressed some of those
issues but won’t know for sure until Sunday afternoon’s race.”
“I can’t dwell on what happened in St. Pete,” Ott said of the
incidents that eliminated him from both races, leaving him 16th in
points. “I’ve put that behind me and look forward to racing at Long
Beach. We expect to put both of our Nissans in the top 10 and work our
way back into the 2010 Championships.”
Rivera, who finished seventh at Long Beach in 2009 driving a Porsche,
sits ninth in points after the opening two Rounds in St. Petersburg,
where he finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Ott is 16th after
retiring from both events.
The #96 (Ott) and #97 (Rivera) Nissan/Brass Monkey Racing Nissan GT-Rs
will be in action Friday afternoon, April 16, for the opening Round of
practice at 4:20 p.m. (PST). It’ll be a quick night for the Monkeys,
as the next practice is scheduled for Saturday morning, at 7:15 a.m.
Sunday brings qualifying at 8:25 a.m., with the Round Three race
running after the IndyCar race, at 4:15 p.m.
The team will attend the traditional Thunder on Pine fan festival on
Pine Street in Long Beach from 6-10 p.m. Both Rivera and Ott will be
on hand to sign autographs and interact with fans along with one of
the team cars. The event is open to the public.
Brass Monkey Racing would like to thank its sponsors for their
support, including Nissan, Penske Shocks, Eurotech Industries Inc.,
South Side Performance and Seibon Carbon. For more information, please

SP Engineering Goes 9.62@150

SP Engineering had two Greddy turbo equipped GT-R’s out in Phoenix for a drag test day today.  SP Engineerings white R35 managed a best time of 9.62@150 mph , and Hings black beast did a 9.8@148 mph.

New sticker scheme on the two cars.  The white car has a built engine, the black car is running a stock engine. Bothe cars ran their best times on 18” drag radials.  Now with the GR6 transmission control module(TCM) upgrades though the Cobb Accessport, 9’s are going to be a lot more common.

Speedhunters Goes Behind the Scenes of the First GT-R 200+ MPH Run At the Texas Mile

Boost Logic R35
Linhbergh Nguyen from Speedhunters had a chance to accompany Boost Logic/Tuning Concepts to the Texas Mile speed event .
The Texas Mile and events like it have become popular over the last few years. The concept is pretty simple. Its like drag racing, except instead of a quarter mile, its a mile long.  The “number” that people are trying for is speed at the end of that standing mile.

Official Car Supplier to the FIA GT1 Championship : Nissan

LONDON - April 13, 2010: SRO Motorsports Group (SRO), promoters of the new FIA GT1 World Championship and Nissan today announced that they had reached an agreement that will see Nissan become the Official Car Supplier of the FIA GT1 World Championship for the inaugural 2010 season, with a further option for 2011.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nissan will supply four cars to SRO per event, with one of Nissan's high performance cars becoming the Official Safety Car at each event.

Having been awarded full world championship status by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, the FIA GT1 World Championship will visit 10 countries on four continents, and will feature iconic marques such as Aston Martin, Corvette, Ford, Lamborghini, Maserati and Nissan.

The 2010 Championship starts at the futuristic Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on April 17 and ends at the spectacular circuit built around a volcanic lake in San Luis circuit in Argentina on December 5.

The series features two, two-car Nissan GT-R teams, Sumo Power, run out of the UK and Swiss Racing Team from Switzerland. It marks Nissan's first move into an official FIA World Championship in more than 20 years.

CEO of SRO, Stephane Ratel said: “From the very first time we discussed the proposals for a GT1 World Championship, Nissan was right behind the idea and has been a very enthusiastic supporter ever since. We are therefore extremely pleased that we have reached this agreement, which will give Nissan a great global platform to showcase their range of cars alongside the full GT1 spec racing GT-R's. The Nissan GT-R is an iconic car all over the world and we are thrilled to see it competing at world championship level.”

Soichi Miyatani, NISMO President and Nissan CVP adds: “At Nissan the idea of the FIA GT1 World Championship is a very exciting one, seeing the GT-R on track in competition with these other world famous brands will be spectacular. With the strong global Television exposure in place we are sure that this agreement will be a key to us further enhancing the reputation and stature of Nissan's high-performance cars. It also gives us added exposure away from the on-track action as we look to reinforce the Nissan brand within this core car-loving audience on a global basis.”

Switzer P800 Video : 0-177 mph

Tym Switzer posted up a video of one of the latest Nissan GT-R builds to come out of his shop.  The collective effort of several parties, tuners, the Cobb Accessport has really started to work out for tuning the engine and the TCM to get the R35 to shift.  0-177 mph or 284 km/hr.   60 mph comes up in about 3 seconds. 100 mph comes up in about 6 seconds.  This car moves.

I estimate the current power at about 750 or so whp and approx 720 wtq. The shifts in the video clip were all made at 7000+ rpm to see if it would complete the shifts under full power.
Happy to report that I can see no evidence of clutch slippage in the data that I gathered today. The car is driving with what I would consider "stock like" driveability ... probably could be compared to R mode in stock form. The shifts are all firm and immediate.

Switzer P800 Track Animal Nissan GT-R

Jalopnik posted an article on a recently finished Switzer P800 tuned R35 GT-R.
The Switzer P800 package brings 740 awhp to the table, this car adds, or takes away from that, depending on how you look at it, some weight.  The biggest, most expensive upgrade, next to the actual P800 upgrades are the Stillen AP carbon ceramic brakes.  The 4 brake rotors come in at about 1/2 the weight of the aluminum hatted steel rotors.

What Not To Buy – Ebay Intercooler

When it comes to car parts is cheaper better ?  If cheaper is better then this is the best intercooler in the world. $49 with $55 for shipping. It ships worldwide except to Italy.  These are the type of parts that I get to see on peoples cars. Welds split, tubes blown out.   The kids see the price, and figure cheaper is better, and try to install it on their car. It lasts a month before it destroys itself, and costs a turbo or engine.
Not everything needs to be expensive, but once you get a chance to be around quality made products, you pick the better made, more expensive parts.
This is a twin core intercooler unit. This is perfect for twin turbo sport cars like Fairlady, Skyline GTR and other V6 / V8 Engines.

Consult III Nissan GT-R Kit

Consult III Ebay
On Ebay this seller is selling a GT-R diagnostic kit. This kit is normally only available to Nissan dealers. This is only part of what is required for a complete Consult III to be able to run diagnostics and testing on the Nissan GT-R. This card will let you get into the TCM to perform clutch adjustment, something that is required after any transmission work.  In addition to this kit, you also need the Panasonic Toughbook either a CF-18 or CF-19, and you need the Consult III software, and hardware.  This part of the kit is very difficult to get, and the price is reasonable.
Update : Sold Already. Maybe someone saw it here ?

Nissan GT-R Spec M Rumors

Motor Trend is reporting more on the Nissan GT-R Spec M rumors that have been floating around the interweb. The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R had a MSpec or “Man spec” version. It had softer dampening in the suspension, and leather interior. Less boy racer, more grand touring car.
The Spec M is supposed to take a spot above the Spec V with a sticker price of around $210,000 when it goes on sale in December. Only 30 cars are supposed to be built, making this a very limited production car for a company like Nissan.  One would almost wonder why they would even bother.

2014 Nissan GT-R : Squash Those Rumors

Road and Track Magazines Sam Mitani asked Kazutoshi Mizuno about the rumors that the R35 Nissan GT-R would be replaced in 2013.

2014 Nissan GT-R Rendering

“These reports that say we’re planning on producing a new-generation GT-R only five years after introducing the original, and that we’re going to make it a hybrid, are totally unfounded. I said when we introduced the GT-R that the car’s future will be decided in three years, and we are now entering that third year. Therefore, we’ve been too busy making sure that this GT-R makes a positive mark on the world to think about the next car,” he said.

Technical Overview from MotoIQ : Cobb Tuning Time Attack GT-R

MotoIQ’s Mike Kojima just posted an article on the Cobb Tuning time attack Nissan GT-R.  The article is a very good technical overview of the Cobb R35. From the engine, to the transmission, to cooling, bodykit, wheels, brakes, and cooling, MotoIQ addresses it all.

Mocal oil to water cooler that uses engine coolant to cool the transmission oil. I personally am not a big fan of multi stage setups like this, as I would rather just use air to cool the oil, as every time you have to transfer heat, you lose efficiency, and you add complexity.

Stock brakes with Performance Friction brake pads and ducting.  Ducting is very important to help keep rotor temperatures consistant.  On a car like a GT-R it is difficult as you have a front mounted caliper, and a front driveshaft in the way.  The air should be directed at the center of the rotor to cool from the center out.

Head over to MotoIQ for the full story. Sign up, support the site. All good technical car guys over there.
