Dodson Motorsport Straight Cut GR6 Transmission Gears

There are two main types of gears used in automotive gearboxes.  Straight cut, and Helical cut gears.  Helical cut gears are most prevalent, as they are much quieter to run than straight cut gears. The factory Nissan GT-R GR6 transmission uses helical cut gears. Dodson Motorsport have released a picture of a straight cut gearset they are testing for the Nissan GT-R.

Dodson Motorsports Straight Cut GR6 Gearset

Below is an example of a helical cut gearset.  The straight cut is more efficient, and stronger than a helical gearset. Most race cars use a straight cut gearset.  No pricing information, or release dates have been announced yet.

Take one fairly modified Nissan GT-R, add some C16 , and 30 psi, and this is the result.  Here is an R35 engine, built by SP Engineering, tested in SP's demo car, and then shipped to Dubai.  This one is supposed to be the "small" build.

Purple Zilla vs VMAX at Bruntingthorpe

David Yu from Auto Journals took his modified R35 GT-R to Bruntingthorpe for a VMAX test, and managed to pull out a 196 mph pass. The damp and cold conditions, funny enough in England, I hear they never get wet or cold weather, played some havok on some fast rear wheel drive car.

Head over to Auto Journals on the whole run down from the event.

Battle of the Imports : Auto Club Speedway : Fontana : RESCHEDULED - Dec 5, 2010

The 2010 Battle of the Imports World Finals scheduled for this Sunday, November 21 has been rescheduled to Sunday, December 5 due to inclement weather. “Wow, is all I can say,” commented Frank Choi. “This is not how I anticipated celebrating our 20th year. We have been weather challenged at every event in 2010 and it is definitely frustrating.”

The 2010 Battle of the Imports Finals is scheduled for Sunday, November 21 December 5,2010 at the Auto Club Dragway located in Fontana, CA where competitors from all over will have one last chance at winning before parking the race cars over the winter. "Even though we had a short season with only three events this year, it feels like the season went fast," commented Frank Choi.

"Nobody is immune to the economy and everyone in our industry has felt change in some capacity. For us, we decided to hold a minimal number of events and are looing forward to slowly adding more. We are noticing signs of recovery and are keeping our fingers crossed that the economy starts swinging back (upwards) in 2011."

The Sunday finals will host competitive side by side drag racing along with the Buddy Club carshow for teams looking to claim the $1,500 Buddy Club Award. Gates are scheduled to open early with tech inspection immediately following. Competitors should be aware of the lack of daylight in November and absence of track lights. The event schedule is posted here but is subject to change at the discretion of the competition director.

GT Academy to Debut in the United States

Nissan has partnered with Sony Computer Entertainment and Polyphony Digital on a GT Academy open to gamers in the US market.  Grand Turismo 5 is being released on November 24, 2010, and GT Academy is being opened up for compeition on December 15, 2010.  Registration begins December 1, 2010.

GT Academy will challenge gamers and racing fans alike across the U.S. to compete in a series of online time trials in pre-selected Nissan vehicles in Gran Turismo 5. Throughout the course of the competition, participants will earn free digital content just for playing, as well as have an opportunity to win prizes for winning regional time trials. The top 32 virtual racers in the country will compete in the live national finals event scheduled for March 2011 to become one of 16 GT Academy finalists. The 16 finalists will compete against each other in a series of challenges, including behind the wheel of real Nissan race cars, for a chance to become a professional race car driver as the GT Academy winner for the U.S. The winner will have the opportunity to train with elite race car drivers at international tracks and race as part of a professional team.

The overall competition will run as follows:

Phase One
Racing enthusiasts will put their racing and gaming skills to the test as they compete in various regional online ladders playing Gran Turismo 5 on the PlayStation®Network. Finalists will then participate in a live head-to-head competition.

Phase Two
16 lucky finalists emerge from the live event and go behind the wheel of real cars, including the Nissan 370Z and GT-R, at a comprehensive GT Academy ‘boot camp’. The ‘boot camp’ will be featured as part of a multi-episode reality show to air on SPEED.

Phase Three
The 2011 U.S. Winner will train to become a professional driver in preparation for competing as part of a professional team at a major race event.

For full terms and conditions and more information about GT Academy please visit: http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/

Nissan has run GT Academies in the UK and the Middle East, this will be the first time the US gets an opportunity to compete, and possibly get a ride with a pro team.

Orange You Glad You Own a GT-R

A member of NAGTROC recently decided to make some changes to his 2009 Nissan GT-R, from the mild hue of black, to a very bright Lamborghini pearl orange. Along with the paint, he also decided to add the STILLEN front lip spoiler and sideskirts.   The shots below are of the car getting a clear bra installed.   There should be a complete photo shoot coming up soon.

Brake Calipers color matched to the car.

EGOIST Reviewed and Driven in Japan by Bruneimotors.com

The EGOIST. What is the EGOIST?  Its the hand customized Nissan GT-R now being offered in Japan, and from the look of the article, the Middle East. However, don't expect to see this coming to the US. Too expensive, and too hard to try and sell to the US market.

The EGOIST is going with a much more luxurious interior than the base, premium, black, or SpecV GT-R's.

It had 40 Horsepower more than the previous model from 480HP to 520HP, but from what we driven it felt like 100HP more. It is more sharper in the bends and the acceleration is more intense.

Dry Carbon fiber rear spoiler.

Titanium exhaust. The rear diffuser is redesigned for 2012. There are some extra side vents, and the shape has been altered to lower drag and improve cooling.

Head over to the Bruneimotors.com website for the full story, plus some upcoming articles on driving other models of the new 2011 Japan (2012 US) DBA-R35.
