Inside Line: 2012 Z06 vs 2013 Nissan GT-R

2013 Nissan GT-R vs 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

The head to head tests cometh. In this one, with video from Inside Line, they pit the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Centennial Edition Z06 vs the 2013 Nissan GT-R.  What exactly makes a Centennial Edition?

Our Centennial Edition test car features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Magnetic Ride Control suspension and Performance Traction Management; the last a torque-limiting traction control that manages spark, fuel and throttle at five different levels of intervention (previously only available on the ZR1). In other words, the beast of a Corvette has been tamed by technology.
In other words, its a very well equipped, and expensive Corvette. The Nissan GT-R has also had a good bump in price.  Both the cars are coming in right around the $100k mark.
And even though it has a 3.7-inch-longer wheelbase, is 7.5 inches longer overall and is packing an extra 642 pounds over the Vette, the GT-R actually feels smaller and more of one piece. Its best lap time was a 1:23.8.
The Corvette was nearly a full second faster on the Streets of Willow Springs. Carbon Ceramic brakes, magnetic ride control, and the new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires make the Corvette Z06 shine on the track.

And when the Vette did break its tires loose, it was in a more linear fashion than the violent nature of the GT-R's tires. When we checked the time sheet, the Corvette's best lap time was 1:22.7.
The GT-R was quicker in a straight line, but on the track, and though the slalom, the Z06 has it beat.  Both cars pulled around 1 G on the skidpad. Head over to Inside Line for the full results and pictures. Video after the break.

2012 Tokyo Auto Salon : Motor Trend

The 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon is well and done for another year, and in this post from Motor Trend, Peter Lyon, managed to get some comments from Katsutoshi Mizuno, and Toshio Suzuki. Supposedly this is the first time "Mr. GT-R" Mizuno attended the event, and he thought that he might be able to learn some things from the tuners. It is an interesting comment, considering that his stance has normally been that the GT-R does not need any tuning.

GT-R chief test driver Toshio Suzuki and Toshikazu "Mr. GT-R" Mizuno, the GT-R's chief engineer, who were visiting the salon for the first time, were impressed at what some tuners were doing. "I think we can learn something from these guys. But the issue with souping up a GT-R as with all cars is how much stress can the transmission take?" Mizuno commented.

How much can the transmission take? Stock, it can take quiet a lot, even though it has a few issues. The bigger issue with the GR6 is still the inability for the Nissan dealer to repair it, rather they just remove and replace the transmission in the case of issues.  Even something as simple as a fluid leak, can be a transmission R&R.

Jalopnik Drives the Nissan Juke R

Nissan Juke R

I do have to eat my hat a little on this one. Its not something that I ever expected to come together. However, when you have support from Nissan Europe, and RML building it with a team of engineers, anything is possible. More than just a motor swap, this is a car swap, a rebody.

In this post over at Jalopnik, Mike Spinelli takes the GT-R, I mean, Juke R around the track in Dubai on Nissan's dime.  The 3,600 lb Nissan specs out with a 0-60 of 3.7 seconds, and a 165 mph top speed, although these numbers might be up for debate.

In contrast, the Juke R's shorter wheelbase (by almost a foot!) gives it a more manic temperament than the tank-like GT-R. It's more direct and edgier, changing direction with extra sparkle, but still feels as neutral and easy to predict as its chassis-mate. The higher seating position affects the brain's equilibrium center, amplifying body roll — tweaking the suspension's street tune would correct that — but it's not a distraction during transitions.

Head over to Jalopnik for the full story, on their drive of the Juke R.

Inside Line: 2013 Nissan GT-R Full Test

2013 Nissan GT-R lifting the inside front wheel

Inside Line did a quick test of the Nissan GT-R several weeks ago, but now post the full test with all the details.

They bring up a good point about the driving dynamics of the Nissan GT-R. Has the person that is making claims that the car is boring to drive, actually driven a GT-R?
"The GT-R is boring to drive" and "The GT-R is easy to drive" are statements trotted out by the Internet infidel crowd so often they've become trite. Quite apart from the fact that one must actually have driven a GT-R to make such an observation authentic, these claims are simply no longer true.

From Inside Lines testing, even with the additional 15 horsepower of the 2013 model over the 530 hp of the 2012, the 2013 was not any faster than the year earlier car.

A dramatic all-four-tires-spinning launch netted 60 mph in 3.1 seconds (2.9 seconds with a 1-foot rollout like at a drag strip) and finished off the quarter-mile in 11.1 seconds at 123.3 mph, identical to the 2012 model, other than that car's slightly higher trap speed of 124.1 mph.
Once again proving its better to boil than bog off the line.  You want a balance of wheelspin to forward motion, to keep the car up in the rev range.  If you bog, you have to make those RPM's all up again, and the car is nearly always a bit slower.

Motor Trend : 10 Best Handling Cars Motor Trend Tested in 2011

Lexus LF-A. Tied at #6 on the list

End of the year lists. The Nissan GT-R shows up a couple of times on Motor Trend lists for 2011, 22 cars that stop from 60 mph in less than 100 feet, and on this one, the 10 best handling cars of 2011.

Figure Eight: 23.3 seconds @ 0.89 g (avg)
Skidpad: 1.05 g (avg)
The Nissan GT-R that took down the Corvette Z06 and Shelby GT500 in our budget supercar comparison earlier this year is the quickest all-wheel-drive car to conquer the figure eight, out-pacing the mighty 911 Turbo by 0.2 second. Just to illustrate how volatile the vehicle testing game can be, the GT-R that finished runner-up in the 2011 Best Driver’s Car story needed 23.7 seconds around the same course.
In this list, the GT-R slots in between a pair of Porch  (e left intentionally blank). The 911 GT3 RS is behind it at #4, and the 911 GT2 RS is in front of it at #2.Head over to Motor Trend for the full results.

Nissan Extends Warranty on Instrument Cluster and Audio System

Nissan has extended their warranty on a few interior items in the Nissan GT-R. Originally these items were covered by a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty, but that has been extended to 6 years, and unlimited mileage.  Many of the Nissan GT-R owners I know, have had lighting failures on their instrument clusters.  The lights that illuminate the fuel levels, and other parts of the cluster often go bad. These has been replaced under warranty, but this letter shows that Nissan has identified this issue.

They have also extended the warranty on the audio system out to 6 years. Although less common than the instrument cluster, I have heard of a few audio system/MFD failures.

GT3 Nissan GT-R to Compete in the 24 Hours of Dubai

GT3 class Nissan GT-R

Nissan in conjunction with Nismo and JRM Racing are going to be racing the new GT3 class Nissan GT-R in the 24 Hours of Dubai. The race starts January 13th at 2pm and ends on Saturday the 14th.  Four drivers are schedule to pilot the car, Alex Buncombe, Michael Krumm, Tom Kimber-Smith, and Franck Mailleux.  The official launch of the Nissan GT-R GT3 program is scheduled to take place on January 12th, at the Autosport International Show.  So if you are in the market for a rear wheel drive, twin turbo V6 GT3 car, JRM and Nissan have a car for you.

JRM to run Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 ‘Champions’ car in Dubai 24-hour race

Of all four Nissan drivers scheduled to take part in the race at the Dubai Autodrome, Alex Buncombe is the only one who has driven the GT3 GT-R previously, when he contested a round of the British GT Championship at Donington Park in September. Significantly, it will be the first outing in the car for Michael Krumm, who recorded his World Championship victory at the wheel of JRM Racing’s Nissan GT-R GT1 car last year, together with team-mate Lucas Luhr.
Tom Kimber-Smith and Franck Mailleux will also be driving the GT3 GT-R for the first time. And, although both are used to contesting endurance races, their Championship victories were achieved in Nissan-powered LMP2 (LeMans Prototype Class 2) machines and therefore, piloting the GT3 GT-R will be a new experience for them.
Over the past six-months, JRM has been carrying out a rigorous test and development programme for the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3, which has included three, three-hour races. Therefore, the annual Middle-Eastern endurance event - which starts at 2.00pm on Friday 13th January and finishes at the same time on Saturday 14th - marks the first time the GT3 Nissan will compete over a 24-hour period.
The race will correspond with the official launch of the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3. A press call will take place at 10.00am on Thursday 12th January at Autosport International, at the NEC in Birmingham, where another car will be unveiled on the JRM stand.
Andy Barnes (Managing Director, JRM Group)
“We are delighted to be running the GT3 car in its maiden 24-hour race with a Champions line-up to celebrate Nissan’s motorsport success in 2011. It provides a great chance for us to run the GT-R in demanding conditions over a 24-hour race period. The event also coincides with the official launch of the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 and therefore gives us with an excellent start to 2012, as we begin to supply cars to customers in the coming season.”

December 2011, and Total 2011 Nissan GT-R Sales

Sales results are out, and the Nissan GT-R had a slight decline for December 2011 vs December 2010. 35 units were sold vs 38 in December 2011. It seems that short supply, plus reports of the 2013's increased horsepower might have stolen a few sales.  Total sales for 2011 was 1294 cars vs 877 in 2010 an increase of 47.5%.  954 all electric LEAF's sold bringing the total 2011 sales to 9674 units. The 370Z was down in 2011 with 449 cars sold in December, and 7328 for 2011.

  • Nissan vehicles posted record December sales with 89,937 units, an increase of 10.7 percent over the 81,228 units sold in December 2010.
  • In 2011, Nissan vehicles achieved a record, with sales of 944,073 units a 17.3 percent increase over 2010.

Car and Driver: 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. 2013 Nissan GT-R vs. 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S

911 vs Z06 vs GT-R

Car and Driver Magazine takes three performance car favorites, and pits them against each other in a comparison test.  The USA vs Japan vs Germany in a test that has been run many times before, by many different magazines. Each car has changes and improvements from the previous years. Here is what they have to say about the 2013 Nissan GT-R

One outlier is the 2013 twin-turbo Nissan GT-R. The base price is expected to be about $92,500 once Nissan finally discloses it, and there are few options. In 2012, the GT-R extras were Super Silver paint, a backup camera, and logo-embroidered floor mats. That’s it. (We had none of those options on our car.) The ’13s, which have improved shift feel, the factory claims, plus the 15 extra horses, aren’t likely  to be much different.
The Nissan GT-R is a heavy car. In 2013, its a heavy car. Heavy cars put big taxes on the brakes and tires. They are both wear items. Eventually on track, the brakes show some weaknesses. The brakes on the Nissan GT-R have some room for improvement.
All-wheel drive has a couple of downsides besides the extra weight and fuel penalty (this was the test guzzler at 14 mpg). Namely, it produces understeer and dulls some feedback—though less than before—through the wheel. Despite having an extra 650 pounds to decelerate, this is the only car here without carbon-ceramic rotors. The brakes softened noticeably after a few hard laps.

C-West and Global Auto Cyber GT-R Project

Global Auto is well known worldwide for their Cyber Evo time attack car. It has been the quickest car at the World Time Attack Challenge in Australia the last couple years. Now it looks like they are moving on from the Evo, and building a Nissan GT-R, that they are going to campaign in collaboration with C-West.

Ian from NAGTROC found this on the associated websites and posted it on the site. I am looking forward to hearing some more details on the car. Can they make it as fast as the very light, very powerful Cyber Evo?

2011 Year in Review: Nissan GT-R

2012 Nissan GTR
Some highlights of the Nissan GT-R in 2011. The 2012 US model was released. A GT-R from AMS did a 8 second quarter mile, and 216.9 mph in a standing mile. 2013 rumors were out as soon as June.
