Nissan GT-R Road Car vs GT-R Nismo GT3 Race Car

Who would have thought that someone playing racing video games would ever end up driving real race cars. In this video featuring the 2011 GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough, he goes over what makes the Nissan GT-R GT3 race car different, and the same as the Nissan GT-R street car.
2011 GT Academy winner, Jann Mardenborough, has never been to Spa-Francorchamps before. But during yesterday’s first practice session for this weekend’s 24 Hour race he was 6th fastest out of 66 cars. And he’s annoyed at not being higher up the time sheets.

Check out the video comparing the GT-R street car vs the GT-R GT3 race car after the break.

No R36 For You : Next Generation GT-R in Doubt

Inside Line is reporting that the next generation of Nissan GT-R is in doubt.  Inside Line has a good inside line(ha ha?) on what goes on with the Nissan GT-R, and seems to be one of their favorite cars to report on.  They say with the cars Chief Engineer - Katutoshi Mizuno now retired, that the green light has not been given to start engineering and development on the next car.  The last statements from Mizuno said that the current car would still be undergoing continuous tweaks for about the next 5 years, which puts a new car in the 2018 time frame.

Original speculation was that the R36 would show up around 2014, but that seemed way too early for a car like the Nissan GT-R, based on its past history with modern Nissan Skyline GT-R's.  The R32-R33-R34 GT-R spanned from 1989- 2002, with the same engine, and similar drivetrain, with some chassis modifications, and updates for each generation.  However, the major systems were all very similar though its 13 year run.

Now, it's increasingly looking like that's not going to happen. At first, rumors began to circulate that the next GT-R (R36) was delayed to the 2018 model year and it would receive another face-lift in 2013 to try to keep the car fresh for longer. Then we dug a little deeper and found out that development of the R36 hasn't even started yet.

Personally I feel there is a good chance that there will not be an R36.  In 2002, the time wasn't right for the R35, and we didn't see a car until late 2007/2008.

Eight Second Nissan GT-R Streetcar

Eight second street car.
What can you do in eight seconds?  Don't answer that, I don't actually want to know. AMS has been working with one of their customers for a long time on his Alpha 12 GT-R, and just last week it did an eight second quarter mile pass. The car is full weight with the whole interior, and an exhaust.   Check out the post and video from NAGTROC.

SVM 16 Disc Carbon clutch pack for R35 GTR

Joe from Boostlogic posted some information up in the NAGTROC forum about a new carbon disk clutch pack for the GR6 Nissan GT-R transmission.  The current go to clutch for big builds is from Dodson, and this looks like a promising alternative to the loud and expensive Promax clutch.

  • 16 Carbon Plates
  • 20% Greater Surface area (Larger diameter plates and steels)
  • Billet Machined Baskets for Superior Strength (larger sizes to carry above)
  • 1000bhp + and above Capability
  • 12 Months Development
  • Tested by SVM Cars
  • Designed, Engineered & Manufactured in UK
It is the first world's "wide plate" carbon clutch system on the market
The route SVM have chosen, is to make a multi plate system using oem thickness plates, wider and made of carbon composite material, Unfortunately in practice getting 16 larger sized plates to fit, requires some clever engineering.

Switzer Signature Wheels for Nissan GT-R : 20 x 10 and 20 x 12

Switzer Performance from beautiful Oberlin, Ohio,  is well known for tuning the Nissan GT-R to its fullest with their performance packages. From basic parts, to the popular P800 and R1K. They have just released some information on new Signature wheels in a 20 x 10 and 20 x 12 inch size.

Switzer Performance has been building thousand-horsepower street beasts for years now, setting and re-setting the bar for power, reliability, and build-quality. “It’s the quality of our components,” explains Tym Switzer, “the ‘OEM-plus’ level of build quality and material quality that’s enabled us to nearly double an engine’s factory horsepower without compromising reliability.” Anyone who’s ever seen one of the exhausts or turbo manifolds roll out of Switzer Performance’s garage doors knows the company takes the notion of parts and materials quality to heart … and, now, that same dedication to quality has been applied to a new Switzer product: Switzer Signature wheels.

Switzer’s new wheels are machined from a single piece of 6061-T6 forged aluminum, which allows for maximum strength and minimum weight. “Removing weight is critical, especially unsprung weight. The same car, with these wheels instead of the factory wheels, will brake shorter, turn sharper, and accelerate out of corners harder. Removing unsprung weight is really the ‘magic bullet’ when it comes to improved handling.”

The Switzer Signature Wheels feature matching machined centercaps and the Switzer logo embossed into the rim – features that Switzer says will add to the cars’ future collectability. “They’re pretty exclusive items,” says Tym, “these wheels are going on P800s and Ultimate Street Edition GTRs, for the most part. These are cars that are built to last, and we hope that we see Switzer cars at car meets in twenty years getting the same kind of recognition that Shelby cars and early AMG models are getting now. That’s the dream. Little touches like that will help to separate the ‘authentic’ Switzer cars if and when that comes to pass. We’ll see.”

  • 20x10F -24 lbs, 20x12R 27.5 lbs
  • lightweight construction
  • high-quality forged aluminum
  • specifically engineered for R35 GTR

GT3 Nissan GT-R Takes First Win In British GT

The GT3 Nissan GT-R, rear wheel drive, VR38DETT powered Nissan GT-R won its first race at Brands Hatch in British GT in its debut season.  During the two hour race, the GT-R went from 10th to 1st within three laps, and managed to hold off the second place Aston Martin by just 0.022.

Mardenborough/Buncombe take the GTR’s first in British GT – but they had to fight for it from several cars and teams throughout the 2 hour race. After showing promise at Rockingham, with Buncombe leading away only for the safety car and brake problems to deny them the race win, it looked once again at Brands that safety car periods would again deny them. However, Mardeborough held off from a hard and fast charging Jonny Adam in the Aston Martin by just 0.022 – the closest finish in British GT. Adam recovering after Andrew Howard dropped down the order in the slippery conditions of the first few laps. Andrew Howard jokingly mentioning about dropping down the order on purpose to show just how good his team mate is.
