Tony Quinn Wins His Fifth Targa New Zealand

Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett have been a potent combo in targas downunder the last several years.  The VIP Petfoods sponsored Nissan GT-R just won this years Targa New Zealand, his fifth time winning. Tony mentioned if he won this year the GT-R would be headed for retirement.  After four wins in a row in a GT-R, the question would be, new GT-R, or another car?

Record-setting Targa New Zealand tarmac motor rally winner Tony Quinn said before this year's event that if he and co-driver Naomi Tillett won it the sleek black Nissan GT-R35 the pair have shared for the past four years was heading to his new motor museum in Cromwell.
That mission was accomplished today in Havelock North, the Quinn/Tillett GT-R crossing the finish line for consecutive win number four - and Quinn's fifth - over 10 minutes ahead of Auckland Mitsubishi Evo duo Jason Gill and Malcolm Read.

2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition

Dragtimes took their "Red is faster" 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition to the dragstrip to test out a couple of recent modifications. Their only mods were the AAM midpipe, and a custom tuned Cobb Accessport. Even completely stock this car has run as fast as 10.87@125.26 mph.

The car put down 509 awhp and 516 ft-lbs of torque on HPLogic’s Mustang dyno.   This is around a 40 horsepower peak increase with a 90 horsepower pickup in the mid-range.

Carscoop just published this story about a Nissan Stagea wagon that has been converted to look like a Nissan GT-R Wagon. The car is offered for sale at 35,000 Euro or about $45,000.

The ad says that the car features a 2.5 liter engine, and makes 400 horsepower. Its not a 3.8 liter VR38DETT. Its not 480 or 545 horsepower.  Pity would have been even more fun. Everyone needs a 500+horsepower wagon.

The sparkly rainbow paint and GT-R logo hides a reported 400hp.

John Shepherd's Nissan GT-R

When the Nissan GT-R was first released, I wasn't concerned with the front end of the car- the engine, it was the back end, the transaxle that had me concerned. The GR6 is a dual clutch electronically controlled gearbox, that in the R35 includes the transfercase, the transmission control, the dual clutches, the gearbox itself, and the rear end. A complicated piece, and if you do 26 wheel hopping launches in a row with LC1, known to shatter first gear.  A well known transmission specialist from the DSM world, John Shepherd starting working on fixes for the Nissan GT-R transmission, and eventually bought his own car for shop testing, running as fast as 9.42 on DOT tires.

One of the first specialists to respond to this need was John Shepherd of Shepherd Transmissions, Inc. A long-time fan of AWD performance, Shepherd embraced the GR6 and studied the factory’s improvements year-to-year. “Many early problems were blown out of proportion,” Shepherd admits. “The most common problem is the weak first gear. Other common issues include circlip failures, piston seals, damaged selector pistons and synchro sleeve failures. Today, we have solutions for all of these issues.”

With only 180 miles on the odometer, Shepherd wasted little time getting the V6 engine into the Shepherd Transmissions workshop. Its cylinder heads took a trip to Head Games to receive port work and a complete Ferrea valvetrain. When the finished heads returned, ARP head studs secured them to a newly fortified VR38 block. The engine now features a balanced crank, courtesy of Canton Automotive Machine, Carrillo connecting rods and AMS-spec JE Pistons. AMS-spec Kelford camshafts actuate the valvetrain providing improved lift and duration.

How to Run 9's on 93 Octane: Video Alpha 12

This AMS Alpha 12 built Nissan GT-R from Florida, wingless, and carbon fibered, has run in the 8's on C16 race gas, but in this video on 93 octane pump gas, runs 9.90 @ 147 mph.  Watch the video below.

These types of videos have gotten really popular. Put a bikini model in a fast car, and get a reaction. The expressions of terror, the grabs for the "oh shit" handles.  It might be a little low brow, but its fun.  This video takes the bikini model in a Nissan GT-R video to a whole new level. Something you might not be expecting. Something the driver wasn't expecting.

First Production Nissan Juke-R

This little crossover/suv/thing is a Juke-R. Its the WTF mix of a 1.6 liter Juke, and a 3.8 liter 545 horsepower Nissan GT-R.  I will admit, the first time I heard about it, I thought it was bullshit. Since then I have been proven wrong enough, that the first one is actually on its way to a customer in the Middle East.

Just two versions of the Nissan Juke-R are being created, one in each of left-hand and right-hand drive. The cars have been developed by Nissan and are being built by leading motorsports outfit RML with input from Nissan Technology Centre for Europe (NTC-E).

If you build it, and its odd enough, they will want it, and that is what happened with the Juke-R.  With current exchange rates its about a $650,000 vehicle, so I don't think we will see too many of them.  In theory you could import and legalize one for the US, under something like the Show or Display exemption.

Launch control in a Nissan GT-R is a pretty controversial topic. I have written a lot about it in the blog, but as you can see in this video, people seem to enjoy it. Perhaps why it got pretty well abused when the GT-R was first released, and broke a few GR6 transmissions. LC1 was a violent, non advertised feature in the 2009 Nissan GT-R. 4500 rpms, with a harsh clutch release(just about a drop). The 2013 Nissan GT-R has what the community calls LC5. LC5 is officially called R mode start. 4000 rpms with a smooth clutch engagement.  It allows for very rapid 0-60 times often dipping well into the 2 second range.

Jay Leno and Sam Mitani take a Nissan GT-R for a tour of Tokyo and meet up with some previous generation GT-R's. Check out the video below.




They get a few of the details wrong. The current 2013 GT-R is 545 hp. Started at 480 in 2009.   The Lexus LF-A makes 553 hp, so it makes a little more official power than the R35.  In the video, there are GT-Rs that go back to the 60's/70's.

Switzer Performance Six Wheel Set for Nissan GT-R's

Switzer Performance is turning a Nissan GT-R into a six wheeler? That might be the first thing you think, when you hear about their new six wheel set, but its not exactly this.

The Nissan GT-R comes with a 20 inch stock wheel, its a big car, it needs a lot of wheel to fill out the wheelwells and balance the look. However there are not a lot of high performance drag tires in a 20 inch size.  Switzer has tried to address this issue, along with having your car match the look with a six wheel set. Four 20 inch wheels, and two 18 inch wheels for the rear.

Cars usually have 4 wheels on them (this shouldn’t be news). Many owners of high-end performance cars, however, take their cars to drag strips – where a set of specialty drag radials can significantly improve traction. Better traction makes hard launches easier, lowers the car’s times, and makes the experience that much more enjoyable for the car’s owner

Porsche 911 vs Nissan GT-R on the Figure Eight

2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition on the Motor Trend Figure Eight Course

Motor Trend Magazine took their long term Nissan GT-R Black Edition, and pitted it against the  new Porsche 911 in a figure eight test, to determine how and why they do what they do.

Despite being larger and heavier, the front-engine, all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R is about one second quicker around the figure eight thanks to a 145-hp advantage and series of electronically controlled differentials that send power where it can be best utilized. Though the GT-R is faster around the figure-eight, the two supercars pull the same lateral g.

The Porsche has the new active anti roll system, and torque vectoring to keep the car pointed the way you want it to go.  The Nissan GT-R uses its ATTESA all wheel drive system, and extra power to go though the course. They say the Nissan GT-R has a series of electronically controlled diffs, but really it only has one, the center diff/transfercase. Both the front and rear diffs are not electronically controlled. The R33, and R34 had an electronically controlled lockup(not vectoring) of the rear differential called ATTESA ETS-PRO, but it hasn't made it to the R35 yet.

Usain Bolt and Mark Webber : Nissan GT-R

It's not too bad when you have F1 star Mark Webber as your chauffeur in Japan. In this video, Usain Bolt and Mark Webber head out on the roads of Japan, to Nissan's test facility. At the facility, Nissan will be working with Bolt on a limited edition version of the GT-R.

A special Nissan GT-R(pictured above) built for Usain will be auctioned off on eBay, with the proceeds going to educational and cultural opportunities for youth in Jamaica.

Additionally, Nissan has announced that Bolt will start work on helping to develop a limited-edition version of the GT-R that will be sold to the public. Details of this project will also be announced at a later stage.

Auto Evolution posted a video and some pictures of the prototype 2014(US) Nissan GT-R at Nurburgring. In the video the ground is a little wet, but the car is still moving around the track well. There are a couple of spots on the front and rear bumper that wear camo, but nothing looks too drastically changed.  Video after the break.

Hooning.

Hoon is a derogatory term used in Australia and New Zealand, to refer to a anyone who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviours. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives a car or boat in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, that is, fast, noisily or dangerously. In New Zealand, the term "boy racer" is also widely used. Another slang term, revhead—derived from "rev", an alternate term for RPM—is sometimes used in place of hoon. However, "revhead" can refer to any car enthusiast, while hoon is always pejorative. "Anti-hoon laws", while they generally concern road vehicles, sometimes also target anti-social behaviour in motor boats.

Hoon activities can include speeding, burnouts, doughnuts or screeching tires.[1] Those commonly identified as being involved in "hooning" or street racing are young and predominantly male, although increasingly female, drivers in the age range of 17 and 35 years.[2]

Hoon control laws are beginning to be extended to dangerous and annoying hoon behaviour using boats and other vessels, particularly jet skis. The State of Victoria, Australia passed legislation in late 2009 to control hoon activities using recreational vessels.[3]

In this video, an R35 Nissan GT-R, that has had the front driveshaft dropped, does a fairly spectacular burnout. Sounds good, looks good, hooning.  Not always negative.

History of the GT-R Manga Comic - Part 28

Pages 54 and 55 of the Nissan GT-R history. The R32 GT-R was released August 21, 1989. In 1990 the GT-R hit the race track in Group A racing in Japan.

Australian Bathurst race. These Australian race cars were based on the Group A cars. They had a little bit extra special sauce for the Aussie series, and endurance racing.

Switzer Performance Nissan GT-R Runs 9.42 on Pump Gas

Pump gas can mean a few different things to people. Just because it comes out of a pump, does not a pump gas make. We all know a couple local places that have 100 octane out of the pump, that really isn't pump gas. In this case, Switzer Performance from Oberlin, Ohio uses 93 RON octane pump gas(available everywhere 93 is sold), and throws down an impressive number. 9.42@153 mph. Along with the huge pump gas number, another R1K-X ran a 8.99@165 mph.  Eight second streetable cars are hard to imagine, but Switzer is delivering. Fast enough to bring home a new 93 octane (98 RON) quarter-mile GTR record of 9.42 seconds at 153.30 mph – that’s how fast!

In addition to that 9.42 second GTR record, a second Switzer R1K-X GTR ran a positively blistering 8.99 second pass at 165.54 mph on race gas a few minutes later, earning its place in the growing “8 second club“.

UGR Twin Turbo Gallardo vs AMS Alpha 12+ GT-R

The big boys in Russia are back at it, throwing down about 3000 wheel horsepower between these two giants.  Not too shabby. Not too slow. The UGR tuned Lamborghini did 251 mph in the Dragtimes Moscow Unlimited, so its a healthy car.  In the video the AMS tuned GT-R hits 224 mph, so it goes OK too. Watch the video below, once or twice, I know I did.

The upgraded Lambo cranks out 1,500 horsepower at the wheels and is utilizing the same Hoosier A6 wheels on which it set the Moscow Unlimited Drag Times record of 251 mph.
