Sneak Peak : Widebody R35 GT-R

front teaser pic Here are a couple of pictures that we "borrowed" from someone's computer, some how some way. For those that 255 or 285 mm of rubber just aren't enough in the front. This car is going to put a lot of rubber to tarmac. Look for more details on this kit as they become available.

GOTO:Racing GTR sets lap record and wins first ever race!

GOTO Racing had their R35 GT-R on the track at Thunderhill and took a time trial record, and won a Super Unlimited race with NASA.

gtr_thill7

My brother Chris took the car out in a Time Trials group and in two laps beat the overall TT record for Thunderhill. I was racing the car in Super Unlimited, my only real competition was a 700ish HP Mustang AIX car running 335 Hoosiers all the way around. I missed pole by about .6 seconds, although my qual session was in heavy traffic and I was confident that I could go sub 1:49 in the heat of the afternoon on clear track.

R35 GT-R with Steven Jones at the Helm Takes Back to Back Victories

TW09barnsie001 (Medium) Steven Jones and Ruari Souter-Dawson have taken back to back titles in the Modern Competition class of QUIT Targa West. Jones, who became the youngest winner of the event in 2008, took the win ahead Dean Herridge (WA)/Chris Murphy (QLD) and Alister McRae(WA)/Bill Hayes(WA)**. Competing in a Nissan GTR 35 Jones had an early lead snatched by Tony Quinn (QLD)/Naomi Tillett (SA), also in a Nissan GTR 35, during Leg 1 on Friday before re-taking the lead during Leg 2 on Saturday. Heading into Leg 3 this morning he had a 22 second lead and didn’t look back, taking the win and his second QUIT Targa West title. “There’s no way to explain this victory, it’s just hard work,” Jones said at the finish. “Those Queenslander’s (Quinn) they’re just like a dog with a bone, they don’t give up. We just had to keep out foot down all weekend and he kept us honest big time, but that’s what it’s all about you’ve got to have competition like that.” South Australian Kevin Weeks has taken his first QUIT Targa West title winning the Classic Competition class by 3 minutes 11 seconds. Weeks and co-driver Rebecca Crunkhorn made the switch from a modern Lamborghini Superleggera in QUIT Targa West 2008 to a 1975 Porsche 911 RSR in order to compete in the new Australian Classic Tarmac Competition. “It was challenging this weekend, weather wise but we had a great time out there,” Weeks said. “We’ve had a few goes at Targa West and we’ve been close a couple of times so we’re really pleased that we got one.” Rounding out the top three in the Competition Classic class were husband and wife team David Moir/Vicki Moir (Datsun 240Z) in second and Gary Tierney/David Carra (Porsche 911 Carrera RS) in third. 2c Mark Conacher (Nissan GTR 35) flew his brother Andrew in from Texas to compete in the Modern Challenge and it paid off with the pairing winning the class by 3 minutes 35 seconds in a Nissan GTR 35. Robert Darrington/David Abetz (Audi S4) finished the event in second (for the second time) and husband with husband and wife team, Razvan and Ioana Vlad, (Hyundia i30 SX CRDi Turbo Diesel) third. Rohan Green and Andrew Cutten (Porsche 911) took outright honours in the Classic Challenge class, winning by 11 minutes. Luke Reymond/John Reymond (Volkswagen Golf) and Martin Eyer/Sharon Eyer (Triumph Stag). ** An exhaust irregularity on the Nissan GTR 35 of Tony Quinn/Naomi Tillett (Car 90) has seen them excluded from the results of QUIT Targa West 2009. The Modern Competition class results have therefore changed and now see Alister McRae/Bill Hayes (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X) move onto the podium. Source : Quit Targa West

Stillen 400mm Carbon Ceramic Brake Upgrade

Stillen CCM

Stillen has just released some more information on the AP racing/Stillen 400 mm carbon ceramic matric brake rotors and pads for the R35 GT-R. Pricing has not been released yet.

Once found only on the world’s most exclusive supercars, Carbon-Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes have been developed for the first specifically tuned aftermarket application – the R35 GT-R. These 400mm disc assemblies are 20mm larger than the standard 380mm OE iron discs, yet reduce weight by nearly half. This is rotating and unsprung weight, improving performance in all categories: acceleration, handling and braking.
AP Racing CCM discs are the next technological platform after almost three decades of using carbon-carbon brakes on racing vehicles (even longer on fighter jets). Advances in materials, process technologies and nanoparticle technology make it possible to use a special carbon fiber precursor along with new, patented process techniques. This precursor is converted first into 3-Dimensional, multi-directional continuous carbon fibers then to carbon-carbon (via methane cracking during infiltration by pyrolysis) and finally to carbon silicon carbide (CSiC). We call it Carbon-Ceramic Matrix, or CCM for short.

The STILLEN-AP Racing CCM brake upgrade kit includes: • Front & Rear CCM brake disc/hat assemblies • Front & Rear CCM-specific street & light track use brake pads • Caliper spacers • Active brake cooling package (Not Shown - also sold separately for non-CCM equipped GT-R’s) Source : Stillen

R35 GT-R's Come 1st and 3rd InTarga West prologue

Competitors completed two laps of the 3.47 kilometre course, which was run to determine the
start order for the rally, which officially kicks off tomorrow morning with the ceremonial start in Murray Street Mall at 8:45am.

Defending Modern Competition Champions Steven Jones (WA)/Ruari Soutar-Dawson (WA) set the fastest time of the record 99 car field competing in a Nissan GTR 35.

With the event running in reverse order Jones will be the last car on the road and is expected to be waved away from Murray Street Mall just after 10:00am tomorrow morning.

Fellow West Australian Dean Herridge/Chris Murphy (QLD) (Subaru Impreza WRX Sti) finished the prologue in second, with Targa Tasmanian winner Tony Quinn (QLD)/Naomi Tillet (SA), also competing in a Nissan GTR 35, just behind in third.

Run under an almost constant rain cloud the 4WD cars had a clear advantage over their 2WD counterparts, with grip a constant battle in slippery conditions.

Lea Welch (WA)/Justin Smith (WA) (Ford Escort Mk1) was the fastest of the classic vehicles followed by the husband and wife team of David and Vicki Moir (WA) (Datsun 240Z).

Showing both crew and car could match it with the modern cars in difficult conditions they were the only classic cars in the top 25.

QUIT Targa West is broken up into two categories, Competition and Challenge, which are further broken down into Modern (post-1982) and Classic (pre-1982) classes.

Competition cars are set up as competitive rally cars, each vehicle is equipped with a roll cage
and full safety features. Challenge cars are standard road cars, which run without a roll cage
and are speed restricted monitored by a GPS tracking system.

Celebrating its fifth year in 2009, QUIT Targa West will be held in the City of Perth and the surrounding shires of Kalamunda, Chittering and Toodyay.

Tommykaira R35 GT-R Bodykit Development

tommykairar35

Over at the Luxuxy4Play Forums, Chris "illpayne" posted up some pictures of the Tommykaira R35. Body kits car like clothes or jewelry, some don't suit some people. I like them as long as they are functional. Ducts for no purpose, extra pieces to make them look aggressive just aren't for me. The last I remember Tommykaira was not in business anymore. Maybe someone revived the name, or my information was in-correct.

US Department of Justice Letter : 60 Days to Export or Surrender.

One Kaizo customer recently received a letter from the US Department of Justice about his vehicle.  The letter is a little vague as it says “if my information is correct…” , this sounds like they are second guessing themselves.   They then say that non-compliant vehicles are subject to seizure and forfeiture.

Then the letter states that the vehicle must be exported within 60 days of receipt of the letter.   We had a conference call with a few key people yesterday to start talking about organizing.  If you want to try and be a part of this, please contact me at tyndago at gmail.com .  Based on the information we have, this vehicle was imported as parts, and reassembled by the owner here in the US.  The US allows for vehicles to be imported into the US as parts, and there fore was not “illegally” imported as the US Department of Justice is implying.

Devon GTX vs Nissan GT-R

Devon GTX

Another humorous one here, a nearly one off type car, coming in at $500,000 takes aim at the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911 turbo. The actual car was shown this weekend at Monterey, but most of the pictures here look like prototypes. Dark tinted windows, computer generated renderings. Sure ways to drag $500,000 out of me. Every year, there is someone else that "wants" to build a world beater. They come and go like the seasons. They come back around, but then they are gone again.

The car you see above is the Devon Motorworks GTX which it calls a supercar, and Devon claims that it had set a 1:35.075 laptime at the Laguna Seca raceway in California, beating the Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 Turbo’s 1:39.62 and 1:39.89 laptimes respectively. The company also intends to beat the Nurburgring lap record with this car sometime in the future. Read more: http://paultan.org/2009/08/15/devon-gtx-americas-bid-at-beating-the-gt-r/#ixzz0OLnV2DO8
Funny, because as a lot of people have pointed out, there is no real Nurburgring lap record, but it makes for good blog fodder.

Nissan Says Firefighting GT-R Can Run the Ring Under 8 Minutes

You have probably seen this car already. Pictures of it have been around the last week or so. We just didn't get around to posting them. Over at the Motor Trend blog, they posted that Nissan said the modified firefighting GT-R could still run the ring under 8 minutes with all the gear in place.

2010-nissan-gt-r-nurburgring-emergency

First off, there's the extra 441 lbs. of equipment onboard, consisting of a roll cage-enclosed 13-gallon water tank, medium-pressure extinguisher system, hose winding device, and radio communication gear. The extinguisher features a 60-ft. foam reach and a 66-ft. long hose that are good enough to fight a fire for two minutes on one tank.

Greddy Ups the Ante : 834 ps R35 GT-R

Greddy and Garage Saurus have been working together on upgrades for the R35 GT-R. Previously they reached 655 hp.

With a set of TD06-20g turbos strapped to the side of the VR38DETT, new connecting rods, and 830cc injectors, the R35 laid it down with 834 ps. (Pferdestärke , or metric horsepower) or 822 hp.

The initial test at 1.4kg/cm of boost made over 750ps!! On the second run the boost was turned up to 1.55kg/cm2. This maxed out the injectors to 99% for a 834ps pull!!!

This is not the end of the story, as they will be looking to make even more power.

R34 GT-R vs R35 GT-R : SP Engineering

Import Tuners latest issue has SP Engineerings R34 GT-R, and R35 GT-R in a comparison. Not a real test, unless you count racing the dyno a test.

I wouldn't really compare a twin GT35 RB26 to a VR38, as they are two very different engines. The VR makes a ton more torque down low than an RB,and the RB revs out much higher.

The most impressive feature of the VR38DETT power plant is its linear power delivery, creating a quick-responding, well-balanced engine with minimal lag. From as little as 2,200 rpm, the engine develops 350 lb-ft of torque or greater. "As we continue testing the VR engine, we will eventually find out if this well-engineered motor can handle more boost and power than most anticipate," explains Shen, "but at this time, the biggest downfall is the GR6 dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission, and its reliability at handling 700 lb-ft of torque or more."

Carter, the editor of Import Tuner is a Motorex R33 GT-R owner, so get out there support the issue, buy it off the stand. Thank you much.

Inside Line : Unboxing the Infiniti Essence

2012-essence-det-infiniti-ft-500-1

Inside Line got the opportunity to watch the unloading and uncrating of the Infinti Essence concept car.  Why is it on a Nissan GT-R blog ? Lets look at it a little more and see if we see any future GT-R in it.

The concept car is reported to have a 3.7 liter direct injected twin turbo engine that puts out 432hp. The more interesting part is a electric motor that combined with a battery pack increases the vehicles output 158hp to 592hp.  Partial electric motor driven wheels, partial engine driven wheels. As weird as the concept may sound, it does actually work.

The direct injection engine is a good thing. The new Porsche 911 turbo is coming with a 500hp direct injected 3.8 liter engine. Direct injection is the way of the future, it makes more power, and is more fuel efficient. Like fuel injection in the 1980’s its still fairly new for vehicles, and tuning and aftermarket parts support for DIG(direct injection, gasoline) cars is in its infancy.   The 158 hp electric motors would be on tap for normal everyday driving. They would be powerful enough to move the car around on, and if needed, the DIG 3.7 would start up and really move the car.  Expect more of this concept to be reality than the otherway around.  Might we be looking at the R36 ?

The Infiniti Essence will be on display at the Louis Vuitton store in Carmel, California, on Tuesday. After the Concours d'Elegance, it will travel to Louis Vuitton stores in major U.S. cities, including Las Vegas, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

Cute Camaro Plans to Take on GT-R At Nurburgring

comparison_camaro

These guys in Texas, they think they are special. Probably a little more like short bus special, but they are special alright.  As much as I like GM cars, and we are GT-R fans,   these guys from East Texas Muscle Cars think they can take a V-6 Camaro, put some squirrel turbos on it-oh not squirrel - Squires Turbo Systems remote mount turbos on it, and beat an R35 GT-R at Nurburgring, not likely. 0902gmhtp_08_z 2010_chevy_camaro_engine_options llt_v6_engine_for_camaro_ls_lt_models

They are doing more than just the turbos, a brake upgrade, wheel upgrade, coil overs, and some bushings to address as they say “the stock Camaro's tremendous understeer and cradle walk”.

"We will have a full interior and be running 275/35 Bridgestone RE050 [street] tires. Everyone knows the GT-R wasn't running street tires at the 'Ring
Sport Auto did a 7:38 with a production GT-R.  We think they might have an issue or two getting a V-6 , squirrel charged, coil-overed Camaro within 20 seconds of the time they will turn in a stock R35 GT-R. Results can be skewed in anyone's hands, and if they are trying to sell product or prove a point, you are going to want your product to be on top .

We think they should look at something more like Mark Stielows Jackass.  Its a 69 Camaro with a LS9, ZR1 front suspension, ZR1 Carbon Ceramic Brakes. That would probably be something a little closer to what a stock GT-R will do.

2010 Porsche Turbo Revealed - 500 hp

2010porsche911turbo_05 The horsepower battles start up again. Nissan came in at 480hp for 2009(MY US), and 485hp for 2010(MY US), the same as the 911 turbo. Now for 2010 the Porsche 911 Turbo gets a minor facelift, a boost in displacement, direct injection, and 500 hp. Nissan is no doubt aware of the new Porsche hp rating, and will probably respond with a more powerful Nissan GT-R. While we are Nissan GT-R fans, we are also fans of cool cars, and the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo is pretty cool. Variable vane turbos, the first all new engine in the 35 year history of the 911, 3.8 liter ,direct injection , available 7 speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (dual-clutch) gearbox. Starting at $132,800 its not an inexpensive car, but it is "a Porsche Turbo." Gas mileage increases up, emissions go down. Again, all good stuff.

Lets see how Nissan answers this. We would like to see a direct injected , VVEL version of the R35 GT-R. Source: AutoBlog

PPG Full Gear Set for GT-R Transmission

ppg-full-upgrade-001-540x400 PPG our friends from south of the border, way south of the border, have released some details on their full replacement gear set for the R35 GT-R.  PPG aka  Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes has been making gear sets for the heritage GT-R’s for years, and is now helping to upgrade the 2009 and up Nissan GT-R.  Kris over at GT-R blog posted some  information from Mike at GT-RR. Priced at $10,400 its not for every owner, but the extra capacity of a well made part should make up for it on those 700, 800, 900 hp R35 GT-R’s that are coming up soon.

This picture shows the standard 1st gear vs the upgraded PPG 1st gear. 1st gear worries no more.

GT-R Gets Smoked By Koenigsegg CCR Evolution

ccrevolution Via Zerotohundred.com

Ever been well and truly smoked  in a race by someone before? That, "I know my car is fast, but that is FAST." This is an example of that. Not sure if the GT-R is stock or modified, but either way didn't matter much. 806 hp of Koenigsegg laid it down, and pulled away smartly.  From Wikipedia, claimed acceleration numbers

  • Acceleration: 0-100 km/h (0–62 mph) 3.2 seconds  Top speed: 245 mph (theoretical)
  • Standing quarter mile: 9.9 seconds, end speed 235 km/h (146 mph)

740 All Wheel Horsepower

504x_Switzer_R850 That has a good ring to it.  740 all wheel horsepower.   To make 740 all wheel horsepower out of an RB26, you are running some pretty serious cams, headwork, a set of 2835’s, good fuel, and the rest of the support you need.  Something that that VR38 has that the RB does not, 715 lb-ft of torque.  The 121.5 mm C-C rod on the RB just does not produce that much torque, for that amount of horsepower. From Jalopnik

the package runs about $20,900 and includes the tunes for both pump and race gas, as well as a larger dual-core radiator, thermostat, and Switzer MONSTER intercoolers.
They didn't mention it there, but I am pretty sure it includes larger turbos. It would be difficult to make that much power without upgraded turbos.

Nissan GT-R Wagon

2009-gtr-f34-nissan-fe-500-3

Edmunds Inside Line has just posted an article on the Kids Heart  hybrid of a Nissan GT-R and a Stagea Wagon .  Kids Heart is a shop started by Tezuka Tsuyoshi , well known for driving the Bee-R R32/R34 Nissan Skyline in D1 Grand Prix.  The base for the conversion is a M35 Stagea with a VQ25DET , 276 hp engine.  A V-6, 2.5 liter, single turbo engine from Nissan, that we don’t see here in the US.  The previous generation Stageas were even available though Nissan/Autech as the Stagea 260RS with the full Nissan Skyline GT-R all wheel drive, and the RB26DETT.  Cool wagons, to haul the kids and dogs around.   Even with rear wheel drive and a VQ25, this car should still be fun to haul the rugrats.
