8 Second Alpha 12 Nissan GT-R From AMS Video

Here is the video that a lot of people have been waiting for. The first 8 second pass by a Nissan GT-R. Several cars have been trying hard over the last couple months, and even the last few days, but AMS did it first. They were first to the 9's and now first to the 8's. Nice job AMS. Ivan the Terrible at the helm, trying to make that thing go straight down the quarter with 1356 all wheel horsepower. When big power all wheel drive cars spin the tires, they want to pull all over the dragstrip. This car features the AMS Alpha 12 package, which has so far exceeded their expectations for horsepower. It maybe should be renamed to Alpha 15, because its a lot closer to 1500 horsepower at the engine than 1200 horsepower. Not bad for a "3.8" liter. Although, they have not mentioned how much displacement they are running. Switzer is staying with a 3.8 and unsleeved. AMS was running a 4.0 liter for a while, with sleeves. SP Engineering was running up to 4.3 liters and sleeved. However both SP and AMS split blocks trying for the 8's. It looks like AMS is beyond the block splitting phase and onto the record breaking phase.
AMS Alpha 12 at Great Lakes Dragway

Even with a poor 1.668 60 foot time, the ALPHA 12 driven by our own Special Projects Technician, Ivan Phipps, went 8.975@169.49 mph!

60 foot 1.668
330ft 4.166
1/8th mile 6.042
1/8 mph 132.74
1000ft 7.634
1/4 8.975
1/4 mph 169.49

In addition the 60-130 time record was broken again with a 3.34 second blast from 60-130mph!! This makes the AMS Alpha 12 GT-R the fastest recorded street car to date from 60-130 mph!!!

Not bad for a true street car with air conditioning and all the other amenities of a GTR. You can drive this car to the store or across the country!

Of course all of our sponsors, without your support this would of been much more difficult. Your parts put us over the top!

World Time Attack Challenge GT-R Shakedown

Its only a week away, and some of the cars competing in this years World Time Attack Challenge have been testing. Most notable in this post from SpeedHunters is the Mercury Motorsports Nissan GT-R. Sporting some wild aerodynamic changes, its going to be interesting to see if any cars can come close to the Evo's from Japan and the US. One interesting part, Tarzan Yamada, aka fastest man from last year is going to be a co-driver in the MM GT-R.

Head over to the SpeedHunters blog for a lot more pictures from a recent test day.

Switzer R1KX 1/4 Mile Drag Strip Results

Switzer Performance took their biggest and most powerful performance package for the Nissan GT-R to the dragstrip today. They only got in two passes, but the first pass put down a 9.04@161 mph. Not quiet fast enough to cover the AMS, 8.9 @169 mph pass, but its close. I foresee a little bit of a battle, to see how deep into the 8's each can go. As summer turns to fall, and the temperatures start to fall, expect the 1/4 mile times to decrease, and the mph to increase.  Stay tuned for the video, and the next 8 second car?

60': 1.54
330': 4.04
1/8th mile E.T.: 5.99
1/8th mile MPH: 128
1/4 Mile E.T.: 9.04
1/4 mile MPH: 161.2

First 8 Second Nissan GT-R : AMS Alpha 12

AMS Alpha 12 GT-R. First in the 8's

AMS has done it again. First to the 9's and now first to the 8's. Showing the last string of 9.0 second passes was not a fluke, they ran a best pass of 8.975@169.49 mph. The car is currently making 1356 awhp. The main difference between the last set of passes, and the first eight second pass was a switch to a 345 wide rear tire. A little more tire helped get enough traction to get this car to the eights, although it was still struggling with traction.

60 foot 1.668
330ft 4.166
1/8th mile 6.042
1/8 mph 132.74
1000ft 7.634
1/4 8.975
1/4 mph 169.49
60-130 time was broken again with a 3.34 second run
If you notice those numbers above, from a standing start, in 660 feet, this car hit 132 mph. That would be considered fairly fast. There are a lot of cars out there that can't hit 60 mph in 6.042 seconds, this modified Nissan GTR doubled it.

Behind the Scenes at Top Gear : James May Drives the GT-R

This is a pretty neat video. These guys from Top Gear UK drive a lot of cars. Over the years they have driven countless cars. In this video, James May tries out a 2012 US (2011 UK) Nissan GT-R's launch control on their test track. He likes it so much, he tries it out a few times.

Both him and Jeremy Clarkson seem enamored with the car. Jeremy even mentions that he "might have one". That is a pretty glowing review from guys that aren't big fans of the "flappy paddle" gearboxes, or Japanese cars.

AIT Full Carbon Fiber Widebody Kit For Nissan GTR

Its been a little while coming, but Neo's R35 GT-R has finally been finished and painted. The AIT widebody kit is a full seven inches wider than the stock car. 335 tires all around, put a ton of rubber to the road. This car was at SEMA a couple years ago, and we had some sneak peak pictures prior to SEMA.

This is a full carbon fiber widebody kit including front bumper, front fenders, hood, side skirts, rear quarters, trunk, and rear bumper. I opted to keep using the Amuse wing, I think it matches this widebody GT-R even better than it did on the stock GT-R. The car is 7 inches wider that stock at the wheel wells and is running on 20x12 HRE wheels at all four corners. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 335/30ZR20 at all four corners.

Nissan GT-R Controlled by Android Phone

Here is a neat project, for those of us that like toys, and Nissan GT-R's. Its a Nissan GTR toy that is controlled though an Android phone. For now the project is on Kickstarter, and needs $200,000 worth of funding to become a real product. As of today, there are 47 backers, with $3,085 pledged. There are 25 days left, so if you are interested, get in on the project, and help get it funded.

The car is 1/20th scale and runs on 3 AA batteries. Via an Android phone, by touchscreen, or from the accelerometer in the phone,  you can drive the GT-R toy from up to 30 feet away. Check out the video below to see the car in action. The suggest price for the BlueDrone will be $59 if they can reach their funding goal.

STILLEN Y-Pipe For Nissan GT-R : Fits 2009-2012

A quick video of a Y-pipe(midpipe)only modification to a Nissan GT-R. The rest of the exhaust is stock. The Y-pipe drops 14 lbs of weight from the car, and frees up 20 hp.  The exhaust fits 2009-2012 Nissan GT-R's, and is an easy six bolt swap. The Y-pipe is resonated, so it gives you a more aggressive sound without being too loud.GTR504381 GTR Front with GTR background

9.05@166.66 MPH Video : Worlds Quickest Nissan R35 GT-R

World's quickest Nissan GT-R in a quarter mile, this week. The 1318 wheel horsepower Nissan GTR from AMS managed a best time of 9.05@166.66 setting a new record in the elusive hunt for the 8's. Traction is a big issue even with an all wheel drive car. The track conditions and temperatures were not too conductive for great times, but they were close. After the last round of VR38 failures, they are back with improvements that are working. No need to go tube frame and inline 6 powered yet.

update 7-20-11
Just put her back on the dyno and made some small changes. with the same boost (35 psi) its now making 1356whp on the Dyno jet STD Correction!!! SAE Correction was 1340WHP.

JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R Wins at Paul Riccard

The #23 Nissan GT-R driven by Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr won the qualifying and the championship race at Paul Ricard, at the seventh round of the FIA GT1 World Championship. Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr move into first place in the drivers standings, and JR Motorsports takes over 2nd spot, just three points behind the All-Inkl.com Lamborghinis.  From here, the cars are headed to China for the next event on September 4th.

Press Release Below.

Three Drag Race R35 GT-R's

All business
Not content on the hunt for the 8's? Want to go a little quicker? ITP Racecars in Perth, Australia has been putting together a three car Nissan GT-R race team. Starting with a tube frame, and carbon fiber body, the text from Haltech says the driveline is a secret. However, over at NAGTROC, it was pointed out that an inline 6 engine is clearly visible. So it seems like an RB26 or RB30 based engine will be the choice. There has also been some talk of another Nissan inline 6. Nissan has a 4.2 to 4.8 liter inline 6 called a TB42-TB48 from the Nissan Patrol, so there is a chance that one or more of these cars might get a TB engine.  In this kind of racing, 6 second passes are the goal, as the 2JZ cars have gone mid 6 second at over 210 mph in the US.

Nissan GT-R on Top Gear 1:17.8

Over the last several years, one of the yardsticks of supercar performance has been its lap time at the Top Gear test track.  The 2009 Nissan GT-R was tested there by the program several years ago and managed a 1:19.0 time, putting it ahead of lots of much more exotic machinery.  This time they take a 2012 (2011 MY everywhere else) GT-R and put it on the track.  Click though for the video.

GT-R Crash in Moscow

A GT-R is a fast car. Fast means sometimes it can get you out of trouble, but in this video, it got this guy in a bit of trouble. The GT-R stood up well, the parked cars did not stand up as well. The best bet is to try and avoid solid parked objects.

June 2011 Sales : GT-R vs LEAF

Nissan North America overall was up in June 2011 vs June 2010, Nissan up 16.7%, Infiniti down 24.3%. Shortages after the earthquake caused supply shortages for Infiniti.

The Nissan LEAF sold 1708 units in June, bringing the total sales to 3875 units for 2011. The Nissan GT-R sold 99 units, bringing the total for the year to 827 cars. This obviously means that that LEAF is at least four times, but maybe seventeen times more popular than the Nissan GT-R.

Sumo Power FIA GT1 Nissan GT-R: Up Close and Personal

Sumo Power #20 and #21 Nissan GT-R's

While on my honeymoon, I had a chance to go to a FIA GT1 race at the Navarra Circuit in Spain. For the last few years, I have been involved with the Nissan GT-R, and I talk to a lot of people from around the globe. One day, fairly randomly, Andy Barnes from Sumo Power asked me if I had a chance I should attend a GT1 race. Looking at my wedding day, and the race schedule, Navarra Spain on July 2nd and 3rd sounded perfect. Andy put me into contact with a few people from his organization, and everything came together. Don't think this was only my idea as my wife is also involved in the automotive industry, and we met while racing a Nissan Skyline GT-R.

We flew into Madrid and had a chance to sight see, and visit several museums over the first few days in Spain. Everything can't be race cars and racing.  At least not on your honeymoon.

Spy Shots : FIA GT3 Nissan GT-R

Speedhunters posted a couple of pictures of the FIA GT3 Nissan GT-R.  JR Motorsports that runs a couple of GT-R's in FIA GT1 will be in charge of the development of the car in conjunction with Nismo.   The GT3 car will be closer inline with the factory R35 GT-R rather than the wild modifications of the GT1 car.  The rumors say the car is equipped with a VR38DETT and a paddle shifted Hewland transaxle mounted in the rear of the car. To comply with FIA GT3 rules, the car is rear wheel drive, not all wheel drive like the factory GT-R.

New Highest Horsepower Nissan R35 GT-R : 1248 AWHP Video

1248 AWHP?  One thousand two hundred fourty eight all wheel horsepower.  That is what the latest beast from the Switzer Performance shop laid down on a Mustang dyno in Ohio.  Thirty eight psi of boost though a couple of "large" turbos.
After a couple of other shops have had some issues with sleeved blocks, Switzer has decided to go a bit of a different route, and runs the VR38DETT without steel sleeves in it. They think that this is the way to go, and they have a dyno chart to prove it.  They should be running the car at the drag strip soon, seeing if they can get it quicker than AMS's 9.0 pass. Check out the video below.

FIA GT3 Nissan GT-R Details

This weekend at the FIA GT1 race, we got a preview of the specifications for the Nissan GT-R FIA GT3 . The car was first tested last week, and will run a limited schedule this year.  GT3 cars are not as radical as the GT1 cars. They have iron brakes, less widening, less rubber, different engine configurations. A few examples are Lamborghini Gallardo, Aston Martin, Mercedes SLS, BMW Z4, Porshe RSR.

GT3 impound at Navarra, Spain
The car shown above will run a standard Nissan GT-R V6 engine, the VR38DETT. As all cars in GT3 are rear wheel drive, it is converted to rear drive with the GR6 transmission/transaxle swapped with a Hewland transaxle. Looking forward to some more details, and seeing it on the track.

Sumo Power GT-R vs Street Car GT-R

Steve Sutcliffe from Racer Magazine had a great opportunity to take both a normal 2011 UK (2012 US) Nissan GT-R and the full blown Sumo Power FIA GT1 GT-R around Silverstone circuit in the UK. The GT1 car is a purpose built race car, rear wheel drive, V8 powered, and on slicks, but they are restricted in horsepower.

A prod on the starter button unleashes big surprise number one. The sound is unmistakably that of a V8, in this case a 600hp 5.5-liter V8, which couldn't be more different in character from the road car's smooth, 479hp twin-turbo V6 (ABOVE). Surprise number two comes when you discover that this car is rear-wheel drive, not four-wheel drive, and that it weighs just 2,755lbs.
That means it develops 480hp per ton, versus 301hp per ton for the road car. Oh yes, and it has carbon-ceramic brakes, an electronic sequential 6-speed gearbox (push away to shift down, pull back to shift up, don't worry about the clutch once you get going), plus a set of very slick, very cold Michelin race tires.

Head over to Racer Magazine for the full article and pictures.  I will have a chance to have a lot more pictures of the GT1 cars starting tomorrow.

Updates : FIA GT1 at Navarra, Spain

Sorry for the lack of GT-R news the last couple weeks. I had this wedding thing to attend. Part of my honeymoon to Spain is a trip to Navarra for the FIA GT1 race. Coming up tomorrow. I was lucky enough to be invited by Andy Barnes from Sumo Power/ JR Motorsports. Looking forward to it.
