Nissan GT-R Spec V : Full Test Inside Line

Edmunds Inside Line got their hands on a Nissan GT-R Spec V to test. Check out the test, pictures, and videos over on Inside Line.
Sitting here on the asphalt at Tochigi, the 2009 Nissan GT-R SpecV looks more menacing than the standard GT-R. It wears $5,900 in optional Ultimate Black Opal paint (a shade of deep purple), as well as a grille, front brake ducts and rear wing made from lightweight carbon fiber. The forged-aluminum 20-inch wheels by Rays Engineering also reduce weight. To shed further pounds, Mizuno also directed the removal of the two tight-fitting rear seats, replacing them with soft plastic covers. The Recaro seats up front are built up from thin carbon-fiber shells to reduce weight as well.

All told, the SpecV lost 132 pounds, dropping its curb weight to 3,704 pounds. To tell the truth, though, we really had hoped as much as 220 pounds could have been dropped from the bottom line.

he 2009 Nissan GT-R SpecV takes off instantly with virtually no tire spin, and the car catapults to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.7 seconds (3.3 seconds with 1 foot of rollout), while the quarter-mile flies by in 11.5 seconds at 124.2 mph. This compares with our recent retest of our long-term GT-R with its new Nissan-mandated recalibrated VDC switched on, which gets to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.6 seconds (3.4 seconds with 1 foot of rollout) and makes its pass through the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds at 118.5 mph.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (March 27, 2009) – South Side Performance is offering, another first for the R35 GTR, our SSP SS Clutch Packs and SSP RS Clutch Packs for the Nissan GR6 Dual Clutch Transmission. This component is another in a line of SSP products that strengthens and supports high horsepower GTR‘s.

In months of testing R35’s running very aggressive power combinations, SSP has tireless worked to create a wide array of components for the GR6 transmission in order to increase its ability to support high horsepower applications. SSP has experience with high horsepower AWD cars and knows that clutch packs are going to be a point of weakness once certain power levels are exceeded. So, instead of responding to failures after they happen, SSP has designed a solution to prevent clutch failures from happening in the first place.

At SSP we believe that one size rarely fits all and it is because of this that we are offering two different models of clutch packs. The first of these packs is a stock style replacement that includes 12 individual clutch discs that are nearly identical to those that come from the factory. These discs are meant for customers who have broken or worn out their existing discs, but do not plan to run high horsepower application. This is the first solution for owners who wear out their clutches and simply want to replace them with new units without buying an entirely new transmission.

The second offering is our RS Clutch Pack which has 25% more gripping force than the stock clutch packs due to an increased surface area. The disc itself is a complex compound of cotton, carbon fiber, synthetic organic fibers, and other materials. These new materials add to the strength of the discs while still retaining the properties that allow it to hold up in the submerged oil environment of the GR6's valve body. This particular compound will hold 700 whp.

The best part of this modification is that it is a relatively easy installation that can be done at nearly any transmission shop. As a result, this is one of the simplest and most effective modifications a GTR owner can do to strengthen their transmission as a whole.

NOTE: A Consult III needs to be used to realign the clutches after the new clutch packs are installed.

Price and Availability:

This upgrade is available for pre-order starting today for $1,399.00 for the SS Clutch Packs and $1,599.00 for the RS Clutch Packs. SSP will have these in-stock on a regular basis by the end of April. This means no more waiting weeks or months to get the parts you need, because with SSP your power solution is always just a phone call away. Switzer Performance P700 Testing Video

Switzer Performance has been out road testing their P700 kit for the Nissan GT-R on 93 octane pump gas. They put up a video showing the performance of the car. Its pretty impressive. 132 mph in the quarter is making some power. At least 100 whp over a stock car. Looking forward to some good launches out of the car.It should be a solid 10 second car.

The car is still running 93 octane.

Standing start 0-60 (no launch control, just WOT from standstill): 3.35 seconds
60-130mph: 6.97 seconds
Standing start 1/4 mile for trap speed: 11.28 @ 132 mph

Automobile Magazine : Long Term 2010 Nissan GT-R

Automobile Magazine just received a 2010 Nissan GT-R for long term testing from Nissan.

2010 Nissan GT-R Premium:

Miles To Date: 750

Base Price: $84,040As Tested: $87,720Options: -Super Silver Metallic Paint $3000 -iPod interface $400 -Carpeted floor mats $280

Our test car has Nissan's newly calibrated launch control setup, explains Bruce Robinson, senior development engineer for Nissan Tech Center North America, who delivered the car to our offices. "Previously, [our launch control] came out at 4500 rpm in first gear with one foot of rear-wheel spin, and then the fronts would grab," Robinson continues. "With our new calibration, we launch at 3000 rpm because there's more midrange turbo boost. It works [with the dual-clutch automatic transmission] in either manual or automatic mode, but the quickest way is just to leave it in automatic and let the engine shift at redline." In short, Robinson says, put one foot on the brake and floor the accelerator with the other, but be sure to leave VDC (stability control) on, lest we void the warranty.

The 2010 car gets a 5 hp bump to 485 hp, new darker wheels, revised spring rates and dampening, and a couple of other minor changes.

Nissan Special Offers in the Middle East

The Nissan dealer for Dubai and the Northern Emirates is offering a special package price on the Nissan GT-R.

A separate offer on the GT-R provides free first-year insurance and a 60,000km service contract, worth $15,000 - this is available for a limited period. If buyers opt not to take this option, the GTR’s price becomes $101,000 (AED 370,000).

$101,000 isn't a bad price. Not sure what the price is, with the contract.

Stillen Body Components Released

Stillen has just released urethane front lip and side skirts for the Nissan R35 GT-R

Front Lip Spoiler:

Enhancing the aerodynamic performance of such a finely tuned car like the GT-R is no small feat. When developing the car Nissan did a great job of developing an aero package that works well, but left some room for improvement for the true enthusiast. One of the most common complaints of GT-R owners is the car has a tendency to “push” when exercised hard on a race course (understeer). Two ways to fix this condition are through the suspension, or increasing downforce via aerodynamics of the car at higher speeds. Increasing the aerodynamic downforce keeps the front end of the car planted and therefore improving front grip, reducing the “push” effect.

The STILLEN Urethane Lip Spoiler adds 2″ of length to the OEM fascia, and installs directly onto the vehicle over the factory piece. This lip spoiler is designed to hold additional air onto the nose, with flares on the side corners producing a canard effect for extra control.

Another major benefit of the front lip spoiler is the durability. Constructed out of high-quality polyurethane, this front spoiler is nearly indestructible and carries a limited lifetime warranty. This means it can stand up to the hazards of the race track or the drive around town with 100% driver/owner confidence.

Side Skirts:

Continuing the aerodynamic stabilization of the GT-R, STILLEN has developed new side skirts with a 2 inch ledge built in to apply more downforce to the car. This design comes from the testing performed on the legendary IMSA Nissan 300ZX, campaigned in the IMSA sports car series at Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring. Tested in the Lockheed Martin wind tunnel, the Nissan engineers found that by enhancing the side ledge on the rocker it applied a incremental amount of downforce at higher speeds thus keeping the car planted and more stable through high speed corners.

Another major benefit of the rockers is the greatly improved appearance. Offering a much more aggressive look and race proven engineering these rockers are sure to catch attention and compliments. Just like all STILLEN body work these are constructed out of durable polyurethane, ready for paint, and offer a limited lifetime warranty. Perfect for daily driving or track days and utilize the factory skirt mounting points to ensure a perfect fit and finish.

Carbon Fiber Roll Cage

I was checking out at Bens blog and noticed a post on Carbon Fiber Roll Cages. Interesting. I had to investigate it a little more. They only have applications for 996 and 997's and I am sure they are expensive, but very interesting.

The more carbon fiber, the better. Oakley Design even lists titanium body 4 way adjustable suspension. Very cool for the uber carbon fiber and titanium nerd I am .

Hennessey Performance Claims first 700+ whp R35 GT-R

Hennessey Performance claimed the first 700+ whp R35 in a post on Viper Alley yesterday. After a few hours though, it seems like they may have mis read the dyno chart, and the car actually made 700 rhwp , and 600 lb-ft of torque.

Watch this space for some dyno charts and videos.

Modifications :It would have made more power but we ran out of injector at 21 psi. These numbers are uncorrected in 55 deg. air. The SAE corrected number was around 654 rw hp.

Mods include:
Upgraded T3 Ball Bearing Turbos - sorry not giving out the specs just yet
Custom stainless headers
Custom stainless downpipes with external wastegates
Custom stainless midpipe and exhaust
Upgraded Fuel Pump
Upgraded Intercooler Plumbing
Upgraded Inet Plumbing and BOV's
Boost Controller
Custom Tuned Software (using Cobb)

Power was made on 109 octane unleaded fuel.

With larger injectors and more tuning time I think we will hit 700 rw hp SAE on about 24 psi. We will be offering our turbo upgrade system and calibration which should work with most kits out there like the HKS570 kit, etc.

695 is pretty close to 700. They probably did bigger turbos, good gas ,and an aggressive tune. Not sure how much rwd, to all wheel drive will show on a dyno, but my past experiences have been around 20 whp higher rwd only vs all wheel drive.

0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds. Launch Control 2.0

The Nissan GR6 transmission has been upgraded with new software. Many people were worried that this would slow the car down. It has not.

3000-3400 rpm launch. One foot on the brake one on the accelerator. Let go of the brake and stomp the gas. This car with a few mods could get down into the 2's. Bugatti Veyron what ?

PPG Gearboxes 1st Gear Upgrade at Titan Motorsports

Titan Motorsports received the first set of 1st gear upgrades.

PPG is a well known and respected gearbox, and gear builder from Australia. I have run a few sets of their gears in big power (900-1000whp) R32 and R33 GT-R's and I have liked them.

With this upgraded first gear and first gear main shaft we expect the factory transmission to handle the abuse of hard launches allowing John to continue his record setting pace in Samurai Speeds quest for the first 9 second GTR. PPG is also working on a complete gear set for the GTR which should be available in the near future as well, we anticipate to stock both items for GTR owners looking to take their cars to the next level.

Nissan GT-R Headed to Nurburgring in April

Back in November I mentioned that Nissan was headed back to the ring in 2009. It seems like April will be the time frame. The 2009 model year Japan , 2010 model year(Series 2) for most of the rest of the world GT-R. A few improvements over the Series 1 car.

The Motor Report and Nissan Australia mention the GT-R has the production car record, but I think they missed the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Maybe the Dodge Viper ACR.

Nissan GT-R Returns to Australian Super Car

The Nissan GT-R will be returning to Australian Supercar as a Safety Car in 2009. Nissan competed in the pre-cursor to the Supercar series with the Nissan Skyline GT-R.

V8 Supercar Series, CEO Cameron Levick said Nissan has a proud history in Australian Touring Cars particularly through the 1980s and early 1990s so it is
a welcome return for the manufacturer.

“There were certainly some mixed emotions back then and plenty of passion surrounding the GT-R. Now almost 20 years later Nissan is back again as a valuable addition to the sport and a fantastic new partner,” he said

Mixed emotions. Interesting way to put it.
