2012 Nissan GT-R Spec R

In Japan, there may be a higher performance version of the DBA R35 coming out soon.  The Spec R is supposedly going to be the replacement for the slow selling Spec  V GT-R.  As of December last year, Nissan had only sold 49 of the 15,750,000 yen Spec V's.

Switzer Performance tuned GT-R's

Live Blogging, or as close as I can get to live blogging, me being in LA, and everyone being in Ohio.  Switzer Performance has several Nissan GT-Rs out at the IDRC Sport Compact Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.  There should be a P800,R900, R1K, and a 2012 GT-R.

First pass in the 2012 netted a 11.32 with a 1.7 60 foot.

The R1KX is not ready for prime time yet, but initial dyno numbers are impressive

2012 GT-R Cam Timing Changes : Getting to Know the DBA

Ben Linney from GTC posted a comparison of the intake cam timing of the CBA(2009) Nissan GT-R to a DBA(2012).  If you look at the pictures below you will see a lot more cam advance in the mid range, and even a little less advance near the top of the range.  Inside Line dyno tested a 2009 vs a 2012 and the chart shows a bit more midrange power at the same amount of boost. 333 km/hr : 620 hp Nissan GT-R Video

Isn't Youtube great?  Someone in the UAE can take their 620 hp Nissan GT-R and  do 333 km/hr or 206.9 mph, and we can see it any where, on your computer, on your phone, at the movies. OEM speedos are usually a little bit optimistic compared to GPS or radar, but either way this car is moving along fairly well.

Road to the 8's : Results from SP Engineering Test Day

SP Engineering brought two R35 GT-R's out to a private track rental in Las Vegas.  On May 7th, they took these two 1200+hp, 1050 ft-lb monsters out to see if they could reach the 8 second milestone.  However, they did unveil a few issues that they are going to be working on.  They had a split in the block that sprayed coolant and ended the day.

AMS Goes 9.07@160 mph : New Record : Alpha 12

AMS just posted some results of the last trip to the drag strip with their Alpha 12 package.  With a best pass of 9.07@160 mph they are oh so close to the 8 second barrier. On the pass, they had a mechanical failure, and lifted the head at around the 145 mph mark.

Eric from AMS had this to say:

This week we headed to the track for some test passes and to put a little more R&D into the Alpha package. We started the day running 9.3@160 on about 950 whp and steadily increased it to almost 1000Whp (Mustang Dyno) where we ran a best trap of 163mph. It was then that we broke our first rear axle on a GT-R. Thanks to Ivan’s quick work, we swapped it out and continued testing.

To push the limits, we turned up the power a little more and managed to get a 9.07@160. But, at about the 145mph mark, we blew a head gasket and lost a bank. It looks like we’re reaching the limits of the stock architecture of the GT-R VR38 and discovering its week points one-by-one. 

Like the Bionic man, they plan on bringing it back, faster and stronger.  The race for the 8's continues. There are several cars out there that are pushing and exceeding the limits.

Nissan GT1 Racing from Portimão

Nissan GT-R's from SumoPower and JRM Racing saw a great weekend of GT1 action at Portimão. In the GT1 Championship Qualifying Race, GT-R's finished 1-2-3, the first time for a single manufacturer since the series introduction.  The earlier qualifying session saw the GT-R's sweep the top four spots.

The hour long, three-stage Qualifying session saw the British pairing of Richard Westbrook and Peter Dumbreck, in the no.22 JR Motorsports, finishing just ahead of Brazilian duo Enrique Bernoldi and Ricardo Zonta (no.20 Sumo Power GT), with Lucas Luhr and Michael Krumm (no.23 JR Motorsports ) in third, and Jamie Campbell-Walter/David Brabham's no.21 Sumo Power GT in fourth.

The two JR Motorsports battled each other to the end, with Luhr pushing hard to overtake in the closing stages as Westbrook struggled slightly with worn tyres, but he could find no way through, and it was to finish no.22 JR Motorsports first, no.23 JR Motorsports second, and no.21 Sumo Power GT third.

“The big points come tomorrow however and we have some improvements to make to our car. Hopefully we can repeat something similar in the Championship Race - that would be really great for Nissan.”

Jamie-Campbell Walter commented: “If we look back to Zolder we had two DNFs, so Sumo Power team were pretty down in the dumps. To bounce back and have three cars on the podium is absolutely fantastic, not only for Sumo Power but also for JRM and Nissan. All credit to them, the Sumo guys have had a hard three weeks since Zolder to repair the cars and we've had a few little problems here from knock-on effects, so to be third is fantastic - it's a huge well done to everybody in the whole team.”

 After the Qualifying race, the following day saw the field lined up for the second race of the weekend, the Championship race.  This time the GT-R's finished in first and third spot, with the #23 JR Motorsports with Lucas Luhr and Michael Krumm with the victory, and the #21 Sumo Power GT-R with Jamie Campbell-Walter and David Brabham finishing in third. The GT-R's started in first, second, and third spots after there performance the day before in the GT1 Qualifying race.

The experienced Briton was to soon make his fresh tyres count, establishing an 8.5 seconds lead over Luhr's second placed no.23 JRM by the 25 minute mark, whilst Campbell-Walter, suffering from excessive tyre pressure which affected the grip and handling of his car, drove expertly to hold off the strong advances of the no.8 Aston Martin challenging for third. Further back, Enrique Bernoldi - in the no.20 Sumo Power GT that started from 13th following a five place grid penalty held over from the Zolder Championship Race - raced strongly to move as high as eighth place in the field as the pit window opened.

That, unfortunately, left only three Nissans in the race, with Brabham's no.21 Sumo Power GT moving up into third due to Dumbreck's misfortune, and Ricardo Zonta's no.20 Sumo Power up into eighth. Despite the best efforts of Brabham and Zonta to challenge the cars in front of them, this is how the race was to finish, although the no.20 was to later benefit from a 30 second penalty incurred by the car ahead after the race to move up into seventh.“Our boys did a great job at the pit stop which allowed Michael to come out of the pits just one and half seconds behind Peter. Obviously our sister car had a problem at the end, but that's the way racing is: sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are unlucky. With the 1-2-3 yesterday, it has been a great weekend for Nissan.”

Round four of the GT1 World Championship will take place at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany the 14th - 15th May, 2011.

2012 Black Edition GT-R's Hit Dealerships

The 2012 Nissan GT-R Black Edition has been delayed by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. There were a handful of cars in the US, but many more that were supposedly destroyed at the port.  MC from NAGTROC has a 2012 Black Edition on order, and lots of people have been anticipating the release of the cars. This is the first car known to be in the "wild" and delivered to a customer.

One Lap of America : Day 8 Results : Final Results

Todd Treffert's GTR #4 overall

Day 8 saw the last event of the One Lap of America at the Tire Rack. The dry skidpad. The skidpad test consists of several laps around a circle in each direction, and the average time taken to cover that distance is turned into an average lateral G number. Sounds a lot more exciting than it actually is.

Coming in the first spot in the skidpad was Catesby Jones in his GT-R with a 1.120 G average. In the number two spot was the Top Speed car with a 1.098. Third spot was held down by a CRX that did a 1.094. Fourth was another Honda, this time a Civic that did a 1.065. These two Hondas did really well overall finishing in 7th, and 10th spots overall.  In fifth spot on the skidpad was Todd Trefferts GT-R with a 1.054 average.

Catesby Jones GT-R #5 overall

Overall results. We all know by now that TopSpeed clinched it yesterday. 2nd place to the 2011 TurboS. 3rd place to Billy Johnson in the Roush Mustang. A big suprise is Todd Treffert in his R35, that has Dunlop Sport Maxx(2012 tire) in 285 all around, AP Curved vane rotors, and otherwise stock in 4th place. Catesby Jones, finished in 5th spot. Three out of the top 5 spots with GT-R's isn't bad. Only 100 points total between 4th, and 2nd spot. Basically less than two finishing positions per event over the 8 days.

GT-R TPMS Learning : Cobb AccessPORT

Once again, the guys at Cobb Tuning, and thistle have come up with new and cool features for the Cobb AccessPORT. This new video shows the GT-R going into TPMS(tire pressure monitoring system) learning mode though the AP. This is useful for guys with two sets of wheels. There are other items that you need to do to make it recognize the sensors, but this gets the car ready to accept it. This is not in the AccessPORT yet, but it should be soon.

This shows the TPMS being put into learning mode. I will ask for this to be added to the AP NIS 006 product.

You can either use an activation tool or set the tire pressures to 34,31,29,26 PSI and drive for 3 minutes.

One Lap of America : Day 7 Results

Broken record time, once again, the TopSpeed GT-R with Leh Keen driving, beat the competition into submission at Autobahn Country Club. Two events, two wins.   With the wins, the TopSpeed car clinches the victory in the 2011 One Lap of America. This is only the second time a team has won all the road course events, last year it was Leh Keen in the TopSpeed Porsche GT2, and this year same guy, new car.  The final event, back at the Tire Rack on Saturday is the dry skidpad.

In the morning session Leh came in with a 3:22.069, beating Billy Johnson in the Roush Mustang by 11 seconds, with a 3:32.291. In third spot, with a 3:37.437 was the 2011 Porsche Turbo S. Todd Treffert came in 8th spot with a 3:40.763. The third GT-R of Catesby Jones came in with a 3:44.637 to finish in 12th spot.  This shook up the overall standings.

The afternoon session, TopSpeed finished in first with a 4:35.800. Billy Johnson came in 2nd spot with a 4:51.546. Todd Treffert finished the second session in eighth spot with a 5:01.551. The second place overall Porsche Turbo S finished in 14th spot with a 5:07.575. Catesby Jones had some mechanical issues and fell to 59th spot with a 6:00.268.

The second, third, and fourth spots are close enough, that it will come down to the final event, the dry skidpad to determine the overall results. The final day is back at the Tire Rack, and starts at 9am, Saturday May 7th.

One Lap of America: Day 6 Results

Amazingly enough day six of the eight days of One Lap of America closes and Leh Keen, Doug Wilks, and the TopSpeed GT-R are at the top of the leaderboards. Not expected, as they have won every road course event so far. Only not achieving maximum points in the wet skipad, and bracket racing.   Today saw action at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

The Turn in Concepts WRX was back after fixing their engine, supposedly adding 40hp, and looking to provide a hassle to the TopSpeed GT-R. However, they were still 11 seconds off the GT-R's pace.  Leh did a combined time in the morning of 4:44.865. In second place the TIC WRX put down a 4:55.357. Coming in third spot was Billy Johnson with a 5:01.750.Fourth place was the 4000 lb Gorilla GT-R with a 5:01.931, just two tenths of a second over the three laps. Todd Treffert came in seventh spot with a 5:11.086.

In the afternoon session, just before the group had to transit the 690 miles to the next event, TopSpeed did a 4:46.983. 2nd place, 12 seconds back was Catesby Jones in the 4000lb Gorilla GT-R with a 4:58.615. Todd Treffert finished in 9th place with a 5:14.016.

After the 2nd place 2011 Porsche Turbo S fell off pace and slipped back to 3rd spot, Catesby Jones moved up to 2nd place. Todd Treffert holds a 10 point lead over Billy Johnson in the Roush Mustang.  The One Lappers are on a long drive tonight to Autobahn Country Club. The 7th day sees two events at Autobahn, then a short trip back to Tire Rack for the dry skidpad.
