This procedure is useful when a check engine light appears and a scanner is not immediately available. It can help you identify an engine related code, decide whether the car should be driven and preserve some basic information before arranging a proper diagnosis.
Before beginning
- Place the transmission in Park.
- Switch off the headlights, climate control and unnecessary electrical loads.
- Do not press the brake pedal while switching the ignition on, because pressing the brake will start the engine.
- Use a stopwatch or the timer on your phone. The procedure is sensitive to timing.
- Have paper or a phone ready to record every flash sequence.
- If possible, scan and save the codes and freeze frame data before erasing anything.
The accelerator pedal must be fully released when the sequence begins. A weak battery, an improperly adjusted pedal sensor or imprecise timing can prevent the ECM from entering diagnostic mode.
How to read R35 GT-R engine codes without a scanner
- Sit in the driver’s seat with the accelerator fully released.
- Switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine. On a push button R35, press the START/STOP button twice without touching the brake pedal. Confirm that the dashboard is on and the engine is not running.
- Wait three seconds.
- Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal five times within five seconds. Use complete, deliberate pedal movement.
- Wait exactly seven seconds.
- Fully depress the accelerator and hold it down. Continue holding for approximately 10 seconds. Some GT-R service instructions and successful field procedures require closer to 15 seconds. Release the pedal as soon as the malfunction indicator lamp begins flashing.
- Count and record the flashes. The ECM will repeat the sequence, giving you another opportunity to verify the code.
- Switch the ignition OFF when finished. Simply switching the ignition off exits diagnostic mode. It does not erase a fault unless you separately perform the clearing procedure.
How to count the MIL flashes
The check engine light communicates one four digit code at a time:
- The first digit uses longer flashes, approximately 0.6 second each.
- The remaining three digits use faster flashes, approximately 0.3 second each.
- A pause separates each digit.
- Ten flashes represent zero.
For example, a sequence of ten flashes, three flashes, ten flashes and ten flashes represents 0300, which is written as P0300, random or multiple cylinder misfire.
Record the sequence at least twice. It is easy to mistake nine flashes for ten or lose track when multiple codes are stored.
How to clear an R35 engine code without a scanner
After entering Diagnostic Test Mode II and reading the codes, fully depress the accelerator pedal for more than ten seconds. Release the pedal after the clearing interval, then switch the ignition off. Restart the car and confirm whether the malfunction indicator lamp remains off.
If the light returns immediately, the ECM is seeing a current fault. If it returns after one or more drive cycles, the monitor may require specific operating conditions before the fault is detected again.

A basic parts store scanner may read emissions related engine P codes but still miss Nissan enhanced data and every other module. That is why “no codes” on a generic reader does not always mean the GT-R has no diagnostic information stored.

Understanding P, C, B and U codes
- P codes relate primarily to the powertrain, including the engine and transmission.
- C codes relate primarily to chassis systems such as ABS, VDC and all wheel drive.
- B codes relate primarily to body systems, airbags, climate control, switches and other cabin functions.
- U codes relate to communication between control modules.
The second character also matters. A zero generally identifies a standardized OBD code, while a one can identify a manufacturer specific definition. Always confirm the exact R35 service manual definition for the model year and market.
Which scan tool is appropriate for an R35?
Basic OBD reader
A simple reader is inexpensive and useful for emissions related engine codes. Choose one that can save freeze frame information, show code status and display live data. It will not provide complete GT-R coverage.
Nissan CONSULT III plus
CONSULT III plus with the GT-R software is the factory level route. Nissan’s GT-R diagnostic package supports North American market GT-Rs and is required for specialized procedures including correct TCM configuration when a transmission or TCM is replaced. This is more than a code reader.
GT-R tuning and diagnostic interfaces
Many modified GT-Rs already use a COBB Accessport or EcuTek based system. Depending on the hardware, licensing, vehicle year and calibration, these tools can read and clear trouble codes, display live data and perform GT-R specific functions. Use the same platform and tuner responsible for the car’s calibration rather than making uncoordinated resets or changes.
Professional all systems scanner
An advanced aftermarket scanner can be useful if it includes Nissan enhanced coverage for the exact R35 year. Confirm that it can access the TCM, ABS, AWD, BCM, airbag and other modules before assuming that an expensive generic scanner provides complete coverage.
Do not diagnose by clearing codes repeatedly
A code is evidence. Before clearing it, save:
- The complete code number and description
- Whether it is current, pending, permanent or history
- Freeze frame engine speed, load, temperature, speed and fuel trim
- Battery voltage
- Other codes stored at the same time
- What the car was doing when the warning appeared
- Recent repairs, tuning, fuel changes or battery work
Multiple unrelated communication and voltage codes can result from a weak battery or low voltage event. Misfire and fuel trim codes under load can point toward an entirely different problem. The surrounding data turns a code number into a diagnosis.
When not to keep driving
- The MIL is flashing while the engine is running.
- The engine is misfiring severely, knocking, smoking or losing oil pressure.
- Coolant or transmission temperature is excessive.
- The car enters limp mode or will not select gears correctly.
- ABS, VDC or AWD warnings appear with abnormal handling or braking.
- Fuel odor, visible leaks or electrical burning smells are present.
A flashing MIL generally warns of a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converters. Reduce load and stop the car safely rather than repeatedly clearing the warning.
Frequently asked questions
Does switching the ignition off clear the code?
No. Switching the ignition off exits diagnostic mode. The stored code remains unless it is erased using the clearing procedure or a scan tool, or the ECM eventually turns the light off after enough successful monitor cycles.
Will disconnecting the battery clear everything?
Battery disconnection is not a proper diagnostic strategy. It can erase learned values and settings while still leaving some information in other modules. It also removes useful evidence without repairing the fault.
Why did the light return after I cleared it?
The condition still exists, or the monitor detected it again when the necessary operating conditions were met. Read the code again and diagnose the cause.
Can the pedal method read a GR6 transmission warning?
Not completely. Use CONSULT III plus or a proven GT-R specific tool capable of communicating with the TCM and recording its codes and data.
Does code 0000 prove the entire car is fault free?
No. It only means the ECM is not reporting a malfunction through this test mode. Other modules may still contain faults.

If you have your own auto scan tool You can answer the number one question in everyone's mind when that check engine light comes on. An ABS warning lamp that is on usually means trouble. If you are not dealing with a real problem the ABS system has self-diagnosed, you may have a "false" code that was set by some combination of circumstances. Either way, you will have to pull the code to figure out what is wrong.
