Angus MacKenzie, editor of Motor Trend Magazine posted up a few of his favorite cars of 2009, and the Nissan GT-R made his list.
This is what he had to say.
Speaking of character, here's an excerpt from a blog I wrote after hustling our long-term GT-R from LA to Vegas -- the long way -- for the SEMA Show last month: "The coolly calculated Nissan GT-R may not have the rosso romance of a Ferrari Daytona, the charming idiosyncrasy of a Porsche 911, or the aw-shucks muscle of a Corvette ZR1. But in form and function it is a supercar that deftly defines both its era and its origin. All gigabytes and manga, GT-R is a supercar like no other; a supercar that only Japan could have created. I'd call that character." And as for the performance... No matter how often I drive it, the GT-R's supercar-slaying capabilities never cease to amaze me. It is the world's best bang-for-the-buck performance car. Period.
Some, ok a lot of journalists like to default to explaining the Nissan GT-R has no character, the “computers” do all the driving for you. Get in a GT-R and push the far right pedal all the way down, then try and say it has no character. The Nissan GT-R from the R32 days have always been a easy car to drive fast. Would you rather have a car that scares you, and you are not able to extract the most out of unless you are a near pro driver, or a car that makes an average driver fast ? A fast driver in a fast car, is just faster.
So I have Google alerts setup to pull any news stories with a mention of Nissan GT-R. I saw this one pop up, and its good enough to post. Most people in the US probably don’t know this guy, but an actor from Singapore “Edison Chen” Gary Ng secretly filmed himself having sex with about 50 women.
In less than a year, he claimed he had 50 sex partners – including polytechnic students, undergraduates and high-flying executives.
The women, he said, were attracted to him because he ‘grooms himself well’ and drives a ‘nice car’ – a Nissan GTR.
So in Singapore, a Nissan GT-R and good grooming will help you get laid. In the US I think its the opposite, it seems only boys are attracted to GT-R’s. So I always said they would be a good car for a gay man, or an ugly woman to drive. However, if you need a car to help you bed a woman, maybe you should rethink some things. I will have to trust that being an actor, and good grooming took Gary Ng a little further than his GT-R.
This needs an update. Added Forged/Dodson video 11/10/11
The R35 GT-R uses a completely new transmission for Nissan, the Borg Warner GR6 dual clutch transaxle gearbox. The GR6 is an automated manual transmission, even though the misinformed masses call it an “automatic” transmission it is internally much more efficient and shifts faster than an automatic transmission.
This transmission has met with a lot of controversy in the automotive world, both in the real world and online. The first launch control feature(LC1), that was undocumented officially, but existed allowed the car to be revved to 4500 rpms before engaging the clutch. This caused a large amount of wheel spin on some surfaces, that caused wheel hop, and when abused broke gears.
I wrote up some of my ideas on how Nissan could fix this issue with transmission failures. The people I spoke to at Nissan said the cars that broke had been abused, more than 20 launches in a row.
Setup switches. VDC Off= warranty issues
Nissan decided to initiate a software fix for the transmission that brought the launch RPM down to 3000 rpm(LC2). While this sounded like a step in the wrong direction, it actually had the opposite effect, the car got quicker.
The next issue that has come up several times is material getting stuck in the shifting solenoids. This material causes the transmission to go into a fail safe mode, and generally will only engage half the gears. This often shows up as a Code P0732 / P0729.
Another issue that has come up recently is with high horsepower/torque(700+hp) cars not wanting to shift gears. This is a TCM/ECM related issue that is being worked on. SP Engineering posted up some information on the problem. This issue has been pretty much solved thought tuning the ECM and TCM.
After any work to the transmission, and also as part of the performance optimization service, the clutches in the transmission generally need to be adjusted with a Consult III. The Consult III is a Panasonic Toughbook laptop with software to work with Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. However, to work on the Nissan GT-R, you need a special “GT-R card” .The Consult III and GT-R card are very difficult to get a hold of. Mostly only certified Nissan dealers have it. A few aftermarket companies around the world have Consult III’s, but they are not common, and they are expensive. There are 15 different settings for the clutch touch point and capacity, which adjust how the car drives, and the firmness of the shifts.
At the factory clutch settings, the standard clutch starts to slip with the factory fluids at around 650 wheel horsepower. However, recently cars have done as much as 951 awhp on the standard clutches, with a Cobb tune on the engine(ECU) and transmission(TCU). At 951 awhp, the factory clutches were slipping at this level, but prior to the ECU tune, they would slip at a much lower level. There are upgraded clutch pack, and OEM replacements available.
Installing the AccessPORT on the TCM starts with downloading the OEM TCM ROM for safekeeping, so the TCM can be returned to its stock configuration at any time. Once the OEM TCM ROM is stored, the AccessPORT flashes a new Level 1 map onto the TCM that is based on the Nissan LC2 logic upgrade, but increases launch revs to 3,300RPM and includes more aggressive clutch engagement and throttle curves than stock LC2 logic. The result is a positive launch that gets the GT-R off and running harder than the stock LC2 logic, but with smoother clutch engagement than the previous LC1 logic. Still not enough for you? A simple reflash of the TCM with the Level 2 map will have you experiencing the increased punch from raising the launch revs to 3,750RPM!
NEWAccessPORT TCM Flashing Features!
- ENHANCED LAUNCH CONTROL:
Updates TCM to Nissan LC2 launch control logic with two user selectable launch control modes! Level 1 sets launch control revs to 3,300rpm (300 more than stock LC2) with more aggressive clutch engagement and throttle curve. Level 2 raises launch control revs to 3,700 rpm with the same clutch and throttle characteristics as Level 1.
- CLUTCH GEAR LEARNING:
Perform this factory recommended annual optimization without a trip to the dealership. Shift quality degrades as transmission components wear. Performing this optimization recalibrates the transmission, resulting in smoother shifts and improved driveability.
- TOUCH POINT ADJUSTMENT:
Use the AccessPORT to adjust the amount of clutch drag while stationary. Eliminate excessive creep or set clutch drag for the perfect launch responsiveness with +/- 7 levels of adjustment.
- CLUTCH CAPACITY ADJUSTMENT:
An essential adjustment for higher horsepower GT-Rs to eliminate clutch slip during full throttle upshifts. Increase or decrease clutch clamping force with +/- 7 levels of hydraulic pressure adjustment.
Updated 1-10-11
Clutch Packs
A clutch transfers the power from the engine to the transmission, and allows for the engine and transmission to be decoupled. As the horsepower of the engine is increased, the clutch will start to slip, and eventually fail.
While on the track, the transmission will get hot. The factory heat exchanger uses engine coolant as a fluid to try and cool down the transmission fluid. The problem with this is the coolant temperature will be high, and the temperature difference will be minimal. The cooler the fluid the more protection for the gears.
There have been several gearbox failures related to both seals, and to circlips within the transmission. PPG also offers both a 1st gear, and a 1-6th gear upgrade option for the transmission. Dodson have also started offering a 1st gear upgrade
This is a useful guide on how to read and clear codes on most Nissan’s. The codes are also listed below.
In car ECM Diagnostics/ECM Reset procedure:
1) Sit in the driver's seat.
2) Turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait three seconds. (Do not start the car.)
3) Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal five times in less than five seconds.
4) Wait exactly seven seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for ten seconds (15 on GT-R) or until the MIL (SES) light flashes.
5) Release the accelerator pedal and start counting flashes to obtain the four-digit trouble code.
Long flashes (0.6 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code; count the blinks one through nine and write down the first digit. (Ten blinks indicates a zero.)
The next three digits follow in turn in the same fashion except with faster blinks (0.3 second) and a 1.0-second pause between digits.
The ECM code repeats its self until you turn the ignition key to the OFF position, at which point the ECM resets itself to standard get-in-and-drive-the-car mode.
You can look up the trouble codes in the ESM/FSM; there's a bunch of them. In the ESM, refer to page EC-639.
Additionally, if you get four blinks of ten (0000), the ECM is indicating no malfunction.
A revolution in ignition technology!! The Plasma Direct is the ignition coil with a high power amplifier built in to it. The Plasma Directs produce 4 times more spark energy than stock coils and also generate an ultra fast multi spark discharge of 10 sparks up to highest RPM. The spark amperage is increased 100%, allowing the spark to reach many more molecules and therefore accelerate the ignition and combustion process. This is extremely important in forced induction applications but also improves the performance of normally aspirated engines. The Plasma Direct will increase horsepower and torque throughout the entire rpm range. This upgrade will also reduce fuel consumption. Even the engines with a legendary smoothness will be further refined with the Plasma Direct upgrade. Plasma Directs are OBD II compliant and C.A.R.B. approved, **EACH UNIT WILL COME WITH C.A.R.B. APPROVED NUMBER**
COBB has released v2.00 Maps for the R35 Nissan GT-R include proportional gain boost which offers RPM dependant boost control system and offers a big gain in GT-R performance. If you have an Accessport, download the new maps, and gain the extra top end that the new boost control offers.
New v2.00 Off-The-Shelf Stage1 and Stage2 maps are available for download from the Nissan GT-R AccessPORT Map Database. For the first time, Cobb Tuning is offering specific maps for each major world market, including: Australia, East Asia, Europe, Gulf Spec, JDM, South Africa and USDM. To accommodate global fuel variances, every map in each region is available for 91, 93 and 100 octane as well as 95, 97 and 102 RON.
0-60 miles per hour. Its a yardstick of automotive peformance. 5 second times were the quick times in the 90's . In the 00's 4 second times were the norm, for "fast" cars, a few cars dipping into the 3 second range. Coming up on the 10's are 2's going to be the new 5's ? This car is modified, but only a few small modifications. A Cobb Accessport , a custom tune, and some K and N air filters.
Take a look at this video showing the 2009 Nissan GT-R ripping off 0-60 MPH in 2.98 seconds on the street as measured by a G-TECH Pro RR performance meter.
Stop Tech has released stainless steel brake lines for the 09+ Nissan GTR. These brake lines maintain the required clearance and travel while reducing length and weight. All Stop Tech stainless steel lines are designed and manufactured in Stop Tech’s southern California facility. These lines are inspected and pressure tested to guarantee quality.
Front Stainless Steel Brake Lines Part Number: 950.42017
Rear Stainless Steel Brake Lines Part Number: 950.42512
Inside Line took their modified Evo X, and a stock GT-R and pitted them against each other at Streets of Willow Springs.
Our long-term 2009 Nissan GT-R has run the Streets in 1:25.68. The last stock Evo GSR we ran there did it in 1:32.51. We'd have to find nearly 7 seconds in the Evo. (Maybe we'll take a look at craigslist for jobs we can do at home, just in case we fail.)
Mods to the X were a GT30R turbo kit, Cosworth camshafts, intercooler, exhaust, injectors, clutch, and a tune that brought the X up to 388 whp on 91 octane.
Onto the chassis -265/35R18 Bridgestone RE-11 tires , Volk RE30 wheels, AST coil overs, and brake upgrades from Stoptech and Project Mu.
The Evo went first. After a couple of warm-up laps, Senior Road Test Editor Josh Jacquot, our test driver for the day, ran his first lap in anger, a 1.26.56. Over the radio he relayed a quick impression: "I didn't expect it to be that fast already. There's more time in it."
He whittled the time down to a 1.25.31 a few laps later. Came the report: "This thing is awesome. [Expletive] awesome."
Then it was the GT-R's turn. Right away, the GT-R put down a 1.25.22. But what's this? Each successive lap was slower and slower. Jacquot finally threw in the towel as the GT-R was now simply punishing its tires, not getting faster. The GT-R's first hot lap was to be its best time.
The Evo X can be a fast car, that is certain. However if you modify the GT-R, it will, and can pick up seconds of time even on a small tight track like the Streets of Willow Springs . I would have liked to have seen a Cobb Accessport on the R35, with Dunlop tires. Just those two little differences would have put seconds between the two cars.
Saw this over at the NAGTROC forums. Pretty cool clock. Just incase you need one for the shop or garage, Amazon has them. 380mm same size as the Nissan R35 brakes, but the GT-R logo they are using is the R32-R34 logo.
Many companies offer their , one stop, one set of upgrade packages for the R35 Nissan GT-R. Let's explore some of the packages being offered by tuning companies. The R35 GT-R is a fairly new platform, new engine, new transmission, and it takes time, and refinement to get things all working correctly.
When you are increasing horsepower 50%-100% it puts a strain on every system in the vehicle. Depending on how you use the vehicle you should look at what is out there and make some decisions on what your goals are. Key to putting more power down, are other modifications to the braking, tires, suspension, and driver. Making power is the easy part.
Some of these figures may have changed. Octane rating of fuels is not always stated, but assume it to be race gas(100+R+M/2) unless stated otherwise. All horsepower figures are at the wheels unless otherwise stated. Different brand dynos read differently,so always check into the type and calibration.

Boost Logic
Boost Logic is proud to introduce the new GTR640 package for the flagship model Nissan GTR. This upgrade kit picks up where the factory left off, pushing Nissans premier supercar up to 640 horsepower on nothing more than 93 octane pump gas; and a potent 690 horses on a mixture of race gas and pump! All while retaining the brawny, luxury feel the GTR is known for.
These fantastic numbers are achieved by first replacing the stock Nissan exhaust with custom, handcrafted 3 stainless steel down pipes and mid pipe. The OEM intercooler piping is then replaced with gorgeous polished aluminum and accented with the addition of dual re-circulated SSQ blow off valves. These increases are regulated through the addition of an EVC 6 Boost controller and upgraded turbo actuators; and the car is finished off with a Cobb accessport tuning utility and pre-programmed tunes for regular, 93-octane pump gas.
These upgrades enabled our test car to run an astounding 11-second quarter mile on the drag strip, and then comfortably cruise home from the track.

STILLEN Stage 1 Package takes your standard Nissan GT-R and increases horsepower and torque over 100 whp, and 130 ft-lbs. Not only do you have impressive horsepower gains, the parts weigh 25 lbs less than stock.
Slick tires ? Who needs slick tires ? A member of the NAGTROC forums posted a quick time at a dragstrip. The owner managed to improve his 60 foot, which improved the quarter mile to a 10.66 @ 132 mph on stock turbos. This video is from a 10.7 pass.
SP Engineering has tuned some of the most powerful Nissan GT-R’s so far. They have at least three R35’s that are pushing over 700 horsepower to the wheels. They have run into a problem, that has been talked about, but not too much in the open as of yet. Something a lot of the tuners have been working on. At first the high power cars were being tuned with the Haltech, and not able to shift from 3rd to 4th gear under full throttle. SP Engineering’s demo car, and a customer car both ran into the same problem with the Greddy turbo kit, and the Haltech.
GTR was also making over 750 in torque with the very same kit. Both vehicles were tuned with the Haltech unit. From what we've encountered was this mysterious "NO SHIFT" issue from 3rd to 4th gear. We've been working with Haltech to resolve this issue on a daily basis. We feel the TCM is definitely the reason behind this shifting issue once you reach high torque numbers.
SP Engineering then has been developing their own turbo upgrade kit – the SPE750. The SPE750 kit is being tuned with the Haltech and has also been tuned with the Cobb Accessport .
Stage 1 SPE750 package and Wayne's R35 was next in line. Haltech was also used which produced torque numbers of 782 and encountered this "NO SHIFT" issue as well. Keep in mind the more power and torque we've made on race map this occurs on every setup we've tried. Running the power levels on pump gas levels did not have any issues at all.
91 pump gas was first in line and achieved power gains of 680 awhp and 676 Torque. 109 race fuel was next in line and achieved power gains of 720 awhp and 709 torque. From what we've learned, this "NO SHIFT" issue will ALSO occur using the COBB AP once you've reach high torque numbers shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear.
SP Engineering say they are working with Cobb and with Haltech on a solution to this problem. Until this solution gets worked out, the TCM will be holding up further development, and possibly a 9 second quarter mile pass.
The TCM for the GR6 Transmission is something new to most tuners, however it is something that will need to be looked at in the future, as most performance cars will be dual clutch, and extracting maximum performance will require both engine, and transmission tuning.

538 awhp/ 559 lb-ft of torque. About a 30 horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque gain on the custom tune vs the "off the shelf" Cobb Tune.
SHH always seems to get the HKS information first. HKS are introducing a new intercooler and air guide set for the R35 GT-R. The 400mm x 260mm x 65 mm intercoolers (two) are not priced yet, but come in at 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs) lighter than the stock units. One other important part that the intercoolers include are the air guides to the intercooler. The R35 has some very important ducting in the front of the car that channels air though rather than around the important cooling components. If you have ever worked on race cars, you know how important these guides are to efficient operation of radiators, oil coolers, and intercoolers. HKS claims a lower pressure loss than the stock or a competitors intercooler, and that translates into about a 10 horsepower gain. The press release is dated January 25, 2010, so it might be a part that is at least a month or so off.
